‘Harry Potter’ star Tom Felton on addictions and escaping rehab

In his new book, Beyond the Wand: The Magic and Chaos of Growing Up as a Wizard, 35-year-old Draco Malfoy actor Tom Felton talks about relationship with Emma Watsonpaid tribute Joanne Rowling and remembered how he escaped from an elite Malibu rehab clinic less than a day after registration.

Suddenly I was overcome with disappointment. I now realize that for the first time in a long time I was completely sober and had an overwhelming sense of clarity and anger. I started screaming at God, at heaven, at everyone and no one, full of rage for what happened to me, for the situation in which I found myself. I yelled at the top of my lungs, addressing the sky and the ocean. I screamed until I let it all out.

Felton stressed that on that day he met three strangers who supported him and did not let him sink to the bottom. The first was a tanker who gave the actor water and $20, the second was a taxi driver who took him to Hollywood, and finally a bartender from his favorite place who gave him an overnight stay. Shortly after the escape, Felton found another, less fashionable and hyped rehab center. However, the actor was expelled from there when they were caught in the room of a neighbor.

A couple of times, therapists caught me cuddling with a girl against the side of a building while we were pretending to take out the trash cans. One evening, I committed a mortal sin by sneaking into the women’s department in her room, the actor recalled.

Although Felton never completed the rehabilitation program, he continued to volunteer, distributing food to the underprivileged in Venice Beach. He also became friends with actor, vegan and activist Greg Cipes and spent a couple of months at his house doing yoga. Thanks to this pastime, the actor managed to take control of his life and get involved with psychoactive substances.

That time really reprogrammed me as a person, Felton concluded.

Recall that after filming in “Harry Potter” Felton moved to Hollywood in search of a new job and quickly plunged into the heady stellar atmosphere. Felton began spending money uncontrollably on designer clothes and expensive cars, as well as spending time at the famous bar Barney’s Beanery. According to the actor, before that he barely touched alcohol, but now he regularly drank several pints of beer or shots of whiskey before sunset.

It got to the point where I even thought about having a drink while working. But I would appear as professional as I wanted to be. Alcohol, however, was not a problem. It was a symptom,” Felton admitted.
