Actor Daniel Radcliffe, star of the “Harry Potter” franchise, has reinforced his need to speak out against author JK Rowling’s controversial statements about transgender people. During the height of the Harry Potter creator’s attacks on transsexuals, Radcliffe published an open letter stating that “transgender women are women”.
“The reason I really felt the need to say something when I did it is because, particularly since I finished ‘Potter’, I have met a lot of queer and trans guys and young people who have a lot of identification with movies.” , Radcliffe said, in an interview with the IndieWire website. “And so, seeing them hurt that day, I wanted them to know that not everyone in the franchise felt that way. And that was really important.”
Radcliffe’s open letter was posted on The Trevor Project website, run by a non-profit organization that focuses on suicide prevention efforts in the LGBTQIAP + community.
“It was really important because I’ve worked with the Trevor Project for over 10 years, so I don’t think I could have looked in the mirror if I hadn’t said anything,” added Radcliffe.
Rowling’s controversy erupted in June 2020 when she posted a series of comments on Twitter claiming that discussing gender identity was a way to deny biological sex.
“If sex is not real, there is no same-sex attraction,” he wrote at the time. “If sex isn’t real, the reality experienced by women globally is erased. I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability for many to meaningfully discuss their lives.”
Since then, the author has been involved in several disputes relating to transgender people. And that’s what led Radcliffe to take a stand.
“Trans women are women,” she wrote in her open letter. “Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against any advice given by professional health associations that have much more experience in the matter than Jo or me.”
Radcliffe added that: “For all the people who now feel their experience with books [de ‘Harry Potter’] been tarnished or belittled, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. I really hope you don’t miss everything that was precious to you in these stories. “
Daniel Radcliffe wasn’t the only “Harry Potter” actor to speak out against Rowling. Many other cast members have also made similar statements. More recently, actor Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy in the movies, tried to pull the film franchise away from Rowling.
“I am in favor of choice, dialogue, human rights in general and love. And anything other than those things, I really don’t have time for that,” Felton told The Independent newspaper. “It’s also a reminder that, as much as Jo is the founder of these stories, she wasn’t as part of the shooting process as some people might think. I think I remember seeing her only once or twice on set.”
Daniel Radcliffe will soon be seen in the comedy “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story,” which premieres November 3 on the Roku Channel streaming service.
