Do you know what Gal Costa’s real name was?

Singer Gal Costa was the owner of one of the greatest voices in Brazilian music. The artist marked an era of Brazilian popular music and even sang “Meu Nome é Gal”, a text that he received as a gift from Roberto and Erasmo Carlos. However, Gal was not the artist’s first name.

Maria da Graça Penna Burgos. This is how the singer was recorded by her parents when she was born on September 26, 1945 in Salvador, Bahia. However, the nickname was so successful that she decided to change the documentation.

“I put Gal in my record. He became Gal Maria da Graça Penna Burgos Costa, because when I was traveling there was Borges Maria, and who is Borges Maria?”, He told in an interview with Jô Soares in 2013.

The nickname comes from a line from producer Guilherme Araújo, who began calling the singer Gal instead of Maria da Graça. The change, however, was not immediately accepted by Caetano Veloso.

With the military regime in power, the singer made the reservation that “Gal” was short for “general” and that this made Gal Costa a namesake of General Costa e Silva, who was the president of Brazil at the time.

However, Gal Costa did not pay much attention to Gal Costa’s opinion and adopted the nickname for the release of “Domingo”, the first LP. The record was released together with Caetano Veloso in 1967.
