16-year-old teen details mother’s farewell in emotional report and reveals future plans
The daughter of journalist Susana Naspolini, Júlia Naspolini, has revealed details about her last moments with her mother, who died in October, a victim of cancer. The 16-year-old girl reported her last conversation with the journalist in an interview with Veja, and she said to follow her mother’s example to be strong with her.
Júlia said in the interview that, a few days before Susana’s death, the doctor informed the girl that the condition was very serious and that this motivated her to ask for prayers on social networks. “When the doctor told me, four days before she left us on October 25, that the condition was very serious, I didn’t think twice. Since she never lost faith, I recorded a video and posted it on the networks asking for prayers, for which I am very grateful,” Júlia recalled.
On the same day, mother and daughter spoke for the last time. “That day, already extremely weakened, she spoke to me for the last time. She wanted me to stay by her side and I didn’t let go of her hand. But it was not so. She passed away at 49,” he lamented.
Júlia also said that she has a hard time coping with losses, but that she uses her mother as an example of strength, since the journalist has always faced challenges head-on. “There are times when I’m fine, others not so. My mother, my great example, made me strong. I have followed her fight against cancer closely since I was a child. With the same disposition and optimism with which she made the reports that helped solve the problems of the communities of Rio, she faced life’s difficulties. And they were not few,” she reflected.
The two have always been in the flesh, they did everything together, which intensified after the death of Júlia’s father, the 43-year-old sports journalist Maurício Torres. “I was young then and I couldn’t say goodbye to him at the CTI, as I did now with my mother,” the young woman recalled. “No one expects to deal with these losses so soon, but I am grateful to have had such an intense and happy time with them,” said Júlia.
Júlia says Susana leaves perseverance as her greatest lesson. Even when she had to shave her hair while battling cancer, she wasn’t shocked. Instead, the journalist wanted the moment to be a symbol of strength for those who were going through the same situation.
“He taught me a lot. She never stopped fighting. Even when she was downcast and tired, she was generous and showed joy. It was her initiative to post the video in August where I shaved off her hair, which was already falling out. My mom wanted to show other people in the same situation that they weren’t alone,” she shared.
The young woman was also moved when speaking of the affection she received from the public after her mother’s death. “Before the burial, in Santa Catarina, where my mother was born, the wake was open to the public in Rio, where we live. There I had the chance to see how loved she was, which gave me a lot of comfort,” she said.
“People came from various parts of the city just to thank her for the articles she had made, helping their lives. Others talked about the books she’s written about battling the disease, or were simply there because they admired her style on camera.
Now, Júlia plans to resume her life and considers studying journalism in college, although she is not entirely determined. “In the last year we have had the support of family, especially of my maternal grandmother, who lives in the South and has stayed in our house. I don’t know yet if I will stay in Rio, but I want to finish high school in the school where I have always studied, living with my grandmother,” she said.
“I don’t know whether to try medicine, law or journalism, following in my parents’ footsteps. Whatever the choice, the two have already given me great lessons, which I carry with me. Although all this is not easy at all, my greatest choice is to be happy like my mother ”, she concluded.
