This year has been a year of major change for the Danish monarchs and a test of family ties – especially after Queen Margrethe II stripped some of her grandchildren of their titles. Therefore, it is not surprising that for the winter holidays her children decided to scatter in all directions. Their plans were unveiled today by the Danish royal house.
While Her Majesty and her husband, Prince Henrik, will celebrate Christmas in Aarhus at Marselisborg Palace, her eldest son, Crown Prince Frederik, together with his wife and children, will travel to another continent to celebrate the holiday with Crown Princess Mary’s family. This moment is very exciting for everyone, because in Australia, in the homeland of the Crown Princess, the whole family has not come for more than five years. This means that Tasmanian grandparents for the first time in a while will be able to hug their grown-up grandchildren – 17-year-old Christian, 15-year-old Isabella and twins Vincent and Josephine, who will be 12 in January. The royal house emphasizes that this visit will be private for the royal family, and therefore its details are not subject to disclosure.

It is worth saying that since Mary married her Frederick in 2004, she has returned to Australia at least nine times, four of which were official visits. Before the pandemic, the family used to come here at least once every one or two years, but after 2017 the tradition of visiting relatives on the other side of the globe faded away. In March 2021, Mary made a secret trip without her husband and children for her 50th birthday. She met up with friends who couldn’t make it to Denmark for her holiday and was spotted shopping in the suburbs of Melbourne with longtime friend Amber Petty, who was her bridesmaid at her wedding. There, she bought a coral suit from local brand Scanlan Theodore, which she was photographed wearing at home in Denmark a few weeks later. We won’t be surprised if this time it doesn’t do without fashionable new clothes.
Outside and homeland will meet Christmas and the family of the youngest son Margrethe Joachim. The one whose children Her Majesty decided to release from royal titles. However, according to the House of Denmark, the family’s winter holidays have nothing to do with this drama – Joachim planned the trip long before the fateful decision of his mother. How I felt!
