New viewership data says Prime Video has overtaken Netflix to become the most-subscribed streaming platform in the US. This was revealed by the research company Parks Associates, which annually makes available the ranking of the 10 largest streaming services in the country.
The company has not disclosed its methodology or how it arrived at Amazon’s subscriber numbers in the United States. This metric has been systematically hidden, a reflection of Amazon’s reluctance to be transparent. There are rare occasions when the company discloses statistics or indicates streaming numbers.
However, Parks has specialized in accounting for streaming data for more than a decade, a period in which she has consistently had Netflix’s lead until this year.
At the start of his measurement, Parks’ rankings always showed the same three platforms at the top: Netflix, Prime Video, and Hulu, respectively. However, with the arrival of new services, the scenario has changed, with Disney+ fighting with its “cousin” Hulu and even surpassing it last year.
Now, Amazon has moved into the top spot, with Netflix in second and Hulu retaining third.
According to Parks, the company counted total subscribers across all services through September 2022 and performed “an exhaustive analysis of market trends and profiles of the nearly 100 over-the-top video service providers in the U.S. and worldwide.” Canada,” as explained in a statement.
The change could be a reflection of the increase in the number of streaming platforms, which would have made Netflix subscribers opt for other services, attracted by different content offers.
But the success of Prime Video could also be linked to other factors. In addition to the much cheaper price than the competition, the subscription to the service is also linked to the Prime plan, which includes free shipping for product purchases on the Amazon website, as well as offering access to the Amazon Music library of titles .
The Netflix subscription, on the other hand, gives you access to a single product: the video library. It is no coincidence that the company has started introducing games on its service.
Despite this trend, the release of “The Lord of the Rings: The Ring of Power” would change the idea that videos are “homage” to the Prime membership. In one of the rare times it has presented the numbers, Amazon revealed that 100 million of its subscribers have watched the series worldwide.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy reiterated in a New York Times briefing that Prime Video is “a really important ingredient” in attracting Prime subscribers, but indicated a shift in consumer perspective. “It’s always been something that has driven Prime memberships, but more and more people are joining Prime because of video content,” he added.
Netflix, in turn, is losing subscribers in the US, as speculated in its latest quarterly financial statements. Gradually, the company has begun to win back those customers, logging 73.4 million subscribers in the United States and Canada as of September 30, 100,000 more than the previous quarter. But that number is still below the levels of 2021 and earlier this year.
During its latest quarterly report, the company also revealed that it has 220.7 million subscribers worldwide.
Already last year Amazon Prime Video had declared, before releasing the adaptation of “The Lord of the Rings”, to have more than 200 million subscribers worldwide. The numbers have not been updated since.
The rest of the US Top 10, according to Parks Associates, includes Disney+, HBO Max, ESPN+, Paramount+, Apple TV+, Peacock and Starz, in descending order. Of that list, only Peacock didn’t appear in last year’s accounting of Parks Associates (whose list included Showtime, which was dropped this time after being merged into Paramount+).
Peacock’s growth is also due to his sports broadcast, which includes the World Cup. But the service doesn’t exist outside the United States.
Other differences for Brazilian consumers are the presence of Hulu, which is Star+ in Brazil, and Starz, which has become Lionsgate+ in the international market, also here.
