Jennifer Coolidge, who played flamboyant billionaire Tanya McQuoid in ‘The White Lotus,’ said the success of the current stage of her career is due to Ariana Grande.
Winner of this year’s Emmy for her role in the HBO series, the actress said in a meeting with the singer for Entertainment Weekly magazine that her career was “stagnant” but took off again after being invited to participate in Ariana’s “Thank you, see you next time” video in 2018.
“Yes, I did ‘White Lotus’ and it changed my life. But I truly believe this movement started with you asking me to be in the ‘Thank U, Next’ video,” she told Grande. “After that, I participated in the film ‘Bela Revenge’ (2020) and everything else. And you were the one who instigated all of this. If you hadn’t put me in your video, I don’t think I would have been here where I am.”
Ariana laughed back: “That was the fakest thing I’ve ever heard in my life.”
The singer is an avowed Jennifer Cooligde fan, and caught the attention of the actress by imitating her character in the film “Legally Blonde”, the manicurist Paulette, a friend of the protagonist Elle Woods (played by Reese Witherspoon), in a appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s talk show in 2018.
Soon after, Coolidge also went on Fallon’s show and shared how that impersonation led her to meet Ariana.
“I was going through a ‘dead zone’ in my career and Ariana’s representation on your show was the beginning of that. A friend of mine who is her age told me, ‘You should text Ariana and praise the representation’ Because she has millions of followers, I thought the bots would get back to me,” Coolidge said.
But, much to her surprise, Ariana herself responded. “I did, came the reply, and then I was heading to her house, packing up for a wardrobe fit for ‘Thank You, Next.'”
In the clip, the actress reinterpreted Paulette, the manicurist from “Legally Blonde”.
Coolidge is also known to viewers as Stifler’s (Seann William Scott) mother in ‘American Pie’ (1999), another pivotal role in her career.
He concluded his participation in “The White Lotus” last Sunday (11/12), with the end of the second season of the attraction, in a highly appreciated performance that continues to generate many memes on social networks.
