Actor says Superman will still be around for a long time, but his ‘time to put on the cape is past’
Actor Henry Cavill has announced on social media that he will no longer play Superman in DC films. He made a farewell post of the character on his Instagram, noting that he met James Gunn and Peter Safran, heads of the new DC Studios, and was informed that he’s not part of the plans for the new cinematic universe they’re creating.
“I met James Gunn and Peter Safran and I have some bad news. After all, I’m not coming back as Superman,” he wrote. “After the studio told me to announce my return in October, before their signing, this news isn’t easy, but that’s life,” he lamented.
“The changing of the guard is something that happens,” he continued. “I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build on. I wish them and everyone involved the best of luck.”
He concluded by saying that Superman will still exist for a long time, but that his “time to put on the cape is past”. “It was fun riding with all of you, back and forth,” he concluded.
The message was liked by Jason Momoperformer of Aquaman, who wrote “I love you, man”, Zachary Levi, Shazam!, and the producers of the film “Black Adam”, which included the actor as Superman in the credits.
Also on social media, James Gunn confirmed the conversation with Cavill and clarified that there is the possibility of new projects with the actor in the future. But the next Superman movie will star a new actor, as it will be set in the hero’s early years, as Matt Reeves’ ‘Batman’.
James Gunn himself is writing the project, which doesn’t have a release date yet.
