Elon Musk had another Sunday freak out on Twitter. The billionaire, who spent the day in Qatar to watch the World Cup final, began this morning by suspending yet another Washington Post reporter. Why: Taylor Lorenz asked Musk to comment on a story she was writing about him.
The action reinforced criticism of Musk’s Twitter censorship of journalists, in contrast to the free-for-all he advocates for right-wing extremists.
After silencing yet another reporter, even the self-declared defender of “free speech” decided to prove himself a liberal capitalist who believes in the “free market” and announced a new policy on Twitter: anyone who posts links to rival platforms, such as Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and others will see their profile suspended on the social network.
“We recognize that many of our users are active on other social media platforms,” the company’s official tweet said. “However, we will no longer allow free promotion of certain social media platforms on Twitter.”
Twitter co-founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey said the company’s new policy “makes no sense” in a Twitter backlash.
As the mountain of protests against his Twitter administration grew, before going to sleep Musk decided to test his popularity and ask if he should continue to manage Twitter.
“Should I step down as head of Twitter? I will respect the results of this poll,” he wrote.
After surpassing 10 million votes, the “Yes” (must leave office) snapped with more with 56% of the votes.
It’s worth mentioning that even if he decides to step down as head of Twitter, Musk will still own the social network — and because he owns a majority stake in the company, he can fire any boss who doesn’t do what he wants.
Should I step down as head of Twitter? I will stick to the results of this poll.
