Guitar icon Jeff Beck dies at age 78


The guitarist was being treated for bacterial meningitis, the musician’s family posted on Instagram

JeffBeck, one of the most respected guitarists in the world, died on Tuesday aged 10 at the age of 78. The musician’s family posted a statement on his official Instagram page, stating that he had contracted bacterial meningitis.

“On behalf of this family’s family and with deep sadness we share the news that Beck has passed away,” read the statement released Wednesday evening, 11. “After unexpectedly contracting bacterial meningitis, he passed away peacefully yesterday. Our family calls privacy as we process this immense loss.”

Jeff Beck rose to fame after joining the British band The Yardbirds in 1960. In 1965, he replaced Eric Clapton as the band’s lead guitarist and left the group the following year. He founded his own trio, the Jeff Beck Group.

The guitarist was still playing with the band Beck, Bogert & Appice during the 1970s and, in more recent years, has embarked on a solo career. His guitar playing was one of the inspirations of the musicians who came to create the heavy metal in 1970. Received eight Grammys and ranked number five on the “100 Greatest Guitarists” list Rolling stone.



Jeff Beck died on Tuesday 10 of bacterial meningitis.
