Mexican comedian Leopoldo Roberto García Peláez Benítez, better known as “Polo Polo”, has died at the age of 78.
It was the son of the famous comedian, Paul García Peláez, who confirmed the death, which occurred on the morning of this Monday, January 23, 2023.
“Natural death. He finally died at 5:04 in the morning, he stopped breathing,” García commented in an interview with the hosts of “Ventaneando.”
“Polo Polo” suffered from vascular dementia
The son of the star of films such as “Private Investigator, Very Private” explained that he suffered from vascular dementia.
“[Debido a ella se] they have small leakage episodes and it can go very fast or very slow,” Paul explained.
According to the Mayo Clinic, “vascular dementia is a general term that describes problems with reasoning, planning, judgment, memory, and other mental processes caused by brain damage from swelling of blood flow to the brain.”
García pointed out that, despite his condition, his father was not hospitalized, since “Polo Polo” wanted to stay at home.
“He was watched over all the time by my sister, who never wanted to go into an institution [médica] and he wanted us to always take care of him,” he said.
‘Polo Polo’ was at home at the time of his death and his children were by his side when he breathed his ‘last breath’.
“Not [quedó ningún proyecto inconcluso de él]Fortunately, everything we could do with him was done, everything he wanted could be achieved. Until his last wishes which were to be with us and so he was,” he said.
The comedian and actor will be buried this afternoon, according to his son, at a funeral home located in Mexico City.
Who was ‘Polo Polo’?
Leopoldo Roberto García Peláez Benítez was born in León, Guanajuato (Mexico) on March 4, 1944. In an interview for Distrito Comedia, he revealed that his family gave him the nickname “Polo”.
Before becoming a star, ‘Polo Polo’ worked in the family business, related to the footwear industry, which his son credits with helping him later become a comedian.
“I think life is perfect because having shoemaker parents and being in charge of a factory in Peralvillo, the same people who worked [con él le enseñó] to rag,” said Pavlos.
