Journalist Gloria Maria dies


The TV icon passed away this Thursday 2 in Rio de Janeiro




Glória Maria, journalist and one of the icons of Brazilian TV, died this Thursday 2 in Rio de Janeiro. The information has been confirmed to Earth from the consultancy of TV Globo.

In a statement, the broadcaster reported that the death occurred due to metastases due to a cancer that the journalist was facing. She was admitted to Copa Star Hospital, where she died.

“In 2019, Gloria was diagnosed with lung cancer, treated successfully with immunotherapy, and brain metastases, treated surgically, initially also successfully. it has stopped taking effect in the last few days,” the statement read.

“Glória marked his career as one of the most talented professionals in Brazilian journalism, leaving a legacy of achievements, examples and pioneering efforts for Globo and its professionals,” adds the broadcaster.

The journalist leaves behind two daughters, Laura and Maria.

Life, career and pioneering spirit

Glória Maria Matta da Silva was born in Rio de Janeiro, the daughter of a tailor father and a housewife mother, and graduated in journalism from the Pontifical Catholic University (PUC-Rio), a paid course after obtaining a job as a telephone receptionist.

She came to Globo in 1970 as a radio listener, listening to police radio frequencies to find out guidelines. The following year, 1971, she made her debut as a reporter, covering the collapse of the Elevado Paulo de Frontin (RJ). Since then, she has participated in various news programs on the station, such as Journal Hoje, on RJTV AND at Bom Dia Rio.

To the National newspaper she began charting a pioneering career by being the first female reporter to go live on the news. For JN she has made historical reports, such as the inauguration of President Jimmy Carter in the United States, an interview with João Figueiredo, the last president of the Brazilian dictatorship, and the Falklands War, being she the first Brazilian woman to cover the conflict.

It was on Fantastic, however, that Glória Maria left her mark. She was a Sunday host from 1998 to 2007, and did special features, interviews with personalities like Michael Jackson and Madonna, and made many trips that became cornerstones of her long and celebrated career.
