As she approaches the age of 65, Madonna shows no signs of slowing down and returns to the spotlight to announce The Celebration tour, celebrating her 40-year career. In addition to her recent attendance at the latest Grammys, the pop star also returned to the subject when she graced the new cover of ‘Vanity Fair’ magazine’s March issue.
Known for her provocative image, Madonna, as always, gave something to talk about when she was invited to the debut of the magazine’s “Icon Issue” project.
Simone Marchetti, editorial director of the magazine, underlined: “Madonna has accepted to be part not only of a fashion session, but of an artistic project that is the representation of the values that she has embodied in the last 40 years. Each image is like a reflection on Madonna’s extraordinary contribution to culture in recent decades. These pages mark a confrontation, a turning point and a commitment that does not stop there. A commitment that we strive to tell, explain and illustrate in each issue of Vanity Fair. “
The magazine’s photos have the proposition to print the lasting legacy and limitless impact that Madonna has on music, fashion and society, with designer costumes from major designers and fashion brands such as Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Jean and Paul Gaultier. A true tribute to the Queen.
The artistic project begins on the cover with the provocative image of the singer dressed as Madonna. The design is completed with a heart pierced on the outside of her chest. But the images that are causing controversy are those that show the Madonna in clothes that symbolize Jesus, next to half-naked models, in a representation of the Holy Supper totally distorted in a bacchanal.
It is not today that Madonna is arguing with religion. She had already created controversy by including a black Jesus in the “Like a Prayer” video in 1989, and she received three excommunications from the Catholic Church.
In the interview for the magazine, he assessed: “I think it is important to have rituals and a spiritual life. But religion without understanding, without knowledge, without curiosity and without inclusion cannot be considered religion. I will not join religious groups that exclude others either are extremists. However, I respect all religions and encourage people to examine the beliefs they hold. That they understand the sacred books and rituals, because without understanding there are only dogmas and rules, and an empty exercise”.
“My relationship with religion today is about cultivating my own spiritual practices. And I think it’s important for everyone to do them, but I’m not going to define it for other people. I think it’s important to pray and have a soul connection, with spiritual force, call it what you will. I see no way to survive without connecting with the idea that there is a greater power and energy, or that there are many energies. That there is a metaphysical and mystical world that we are all in a part of which we must remain connected”, concluded the artist.
The production has already caused a stir, with fans and admirers celebrating Madonna’s impact on pop culture.
In a statement, the magazine said that behind the scenes of the editorial it gathered a team of 80 contributors and had two days of recording, both images and video. The project also includes an exhibition and the screening of a short film. The exhibition will take place at the Palazzo Reale Museum in Milan, Italy.
