Balenciaga paid tribute to Ukraine with a parade in a snowstorm

At first glance, it all seemed like one big madness. The Balenciaga fashion show took place at the Paris Fashion Week in an artificial snowstorm, and the conditions for models were not easy at all – wind and snow made it very difficult for them to walk. Few would find the symbolism of the war in Ukraine in all this, but the opposite is true.

Balenciaga’s creative director, Demna Gvasalia, has experienced first-hand what it’s like to be a refugee. Hailing from Georgia and running away from the Civil War as a 12-year-old boy. In light of recent events, these traumatic memories are returning to him, and he has decided to pay tribute to the struggling Ukraine in a show of his collection.

Everything was thought out in detail. The guests found T-shirts in the colors of the Ukrainian flag on their chairs, and even the visual of the show seemed to resemble war conditions – there was loud music and light effects reminiscent of explosions. At the beginning of the show, Demna, who went to school in Ukraine, gave a speech in Ukrainian.

The snowstorm was supposed to symbolize the apocalyptic reality, and it was based on Demn’s own experience when, as a child, he tried to escape just such a storm during trekking in Georgia. “This show needs no explanation. It is dedicated to fearlessness, resistance and the victory of love and peace, “Balenciagy said on the official Instagram.

In any case, the show offered, in addition to a strong experience, also interesting models – black dominated, leather and materials were a frequent accessory, as were massive bags. Among the guests was, for example, Kim Kardashian, who “dressed” in a yellow-and-black warning tape. This look also appeared on the catwalk. The show ended with blue and yellow models symbolizing how different from free Ukraine.
