Season 5 of the Netflix historical series premiered in London on Tuesday evening “Crown”. Starring Elizabeth Debicki, Imelda Staunton, Dominic West, Gillian Anderson, Leslie Manville and others walked the red carpet.
It was expected that Elizabeth’s outfit would inevitably be compared with the images of Princess Diana, whom she played in the new season. And so it happened. A black long DIor dress with bare shoulders and a black scarf reminded fans of the princess several of Lady Di’s iconic outings at once. The first one is famous “revenge dress” Christina Stambolian, in which the princess appeared shortly after an interview with her husband, Prince Charles. In it, he publicly admitted to having an affair with Camilla Parker-Bowles. With them, she deliberately violated all the existing rules of royal protocol: the length, neckline and high heels spoke of protest. But apart from the color, there are no similarities, to tell the truth.
The second is the so-called scarf dress that Princess Diana wore to the 40th Cannes Film Festival in 1987. The author of the blue dress, like many things in the wardrobe of Diana Spencer, was Katherine Walker. The similarity of these two outfits is more obvious: a long loose cut and an unusual scarf tying – through the neck back behind the back. But that outfit was sky blue.

Many also saw in the image of Elizabeth a reference to Diana’s dress, in which she appeared at the reception of US President Ronald Reagan and his wife Nancy in 1985 at the White House. Victor Edelstein’s dress went down in history as “Travolta’s dress” because of the actor she danced with at the party. True, these two dresses are united only by black, floor-length and open shoulders – which, we recall, does not correspond to the royal protocol. Therefore, everyone agreed that Debicki’s stylists decided to quote several of Diana’s famous outfits from the last years of her life, so as not to focus on any particular episode of her biography.
By the way, last year, John Travolta in an interview recalled his acquaintance with the royal person and called this meeting “fabulous.”
