Damaged or dry hair, flakes on the scalp, wavy hair and loss of freshness and shine. Instead of looking for other expensive products to help you, go to your kitchen and find a few ingredients to mix your own hair mask. Simple and definitely cheaper.

COCONUT OIL FOR DRY HAIR AND SCALP

Of course, you can also use fresh coconut, but for convenience, we recommend choosing organic coconut oil, which hydrates, moisturizes and helps prevent split ends and hair breakage. Use coconut oil instead of conditioner, for example, heat it in the microwave and then massage it into damp hair. Avoid the roots though. You can tie your hair in a bun at night and rinse with your shampoo in the morning.

AVOCADO, HONEY AND OLIVE OIL FOR DAMAGED HAIR

There are many factors behind hair damage, including excessive use of styling tools, hair coloring and chemical treatments in general. The avocado, honey and olive oil mask is designed by hair stylist Lianna Zingarino from the New York John Frieda salon. “Packed with omega-3 fatty acids, this treatment helps strengthen hair and add shine,” says Zingarino. However, the benefits of this hair mask do not stop at the hair strands, the avocado-based mask also helps to rejuvenate and hydrate the scalp. Prepare half an avocado, 1 tablespoon of olive oil, 1 tablespoon of honey and 3 drops of essential oil of your choice. Mix the ingredients until completely combined and then apply with your fingertips to wet hair, starting from the ends and working towards the roots. You can comb your hair back into a bun and cover it with a towel so that all the components can work fully. After 20 minutes, rinse the mask with water.

CINNAMON AND COCONUT OIL FOR HAIR GROWTH

Try a cinnamon-based mask—the antimicrobial spice is known to stimulate circulation and promote hair growth and strength, according to hairstylist Zingarino herself. Use 1/4 cup of coconut oil and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, mix well and apply the mask to the roots of your hair, then massage into your scalp. Leave on for 30 to 45 minutes and rinse. Try to apply this mask at least once a week.

RICE AND AVOCADO FOR CURLY HAIR

Curly hair is more prone to damage than straight hair. Owners of curly manes often suffer from dry hair, so a mask containing rice water is ideal. It contains inositol, which helps to regenerate damaged hair and at the same time keep curls in place. Avocado in a mask will give your hair immediate nourishment. Soak a cup of rice in two cups of water for half an hour, then drain the rice using a strainer and mash half an avocado in the remaining water. Apply this mask to your hair and rinse after 20-25 minutes.

HONEY, BANANA AND COCONUT OIL FOR COLORED HAIR

Dyed or bleached hair needs more hydration, which this mask will definitely give you without affecting the shade of your hair. Mix 1 tablespoon of honey, 1 peeled banana and 1-2 tablespoons of coconut oil, then apply to hair and leave for 15 minutes. Finally, rinse your hair thoroughly.

ALMOND OIL AND YOGURT FOR DRY SCALP

If you suffer from a dry scalp, the key ingredient is almond or coconut oil, which keeps the skin barrier strong and hydrated. People often mix almond oil with yogurt or honey because it has some anti-inflammatory properties. Mix 2 tablespoons of almond oil, 1 teaspoon of yogurt (or 1 teaspoon of honey), mix well and apply on the scalp. Leave on for 15-30 minutes and then rinse.

EGG WHITE AND LEMON FOR OILY HAIR

If your hair tends to be more oily, an egg mask can do wonders. It is also recommended by Sadah Saltzman, hairdresser from the AKS salon in New York. However, it is important to use only egg whites, which have protein enzymes that help remove excess oil from the hair. Mix 1 egg white and the juice of half a lemon and apply to hair from roots to ends. Leave on for 30 minutes to one hour, the longer the better, then rinse with lukewarm, not hot, water.
