Animated comedy Futurama has launched its 14th season on Disney+ after surviving multiple cancellations across nearly three decades on television.
Created by Matt Groening and David X. Cohen, the show returned to the streaming service on Monday, August 4. The season begins with a two-episode premiere before moving to a weekly release schedule, reaching a total of ten episodes for this block.
The series first debuted in 1999 and follows Philip J. Fry, a pizza delivery boy accidentally frozen in 1999 who awakens 1,000 years later in New York City. The central characters work for Planet Express, an interplanetary delivery business owned by Fry's distant nephew, Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth.
The new season continues the show's established format, using its 31st-century setting as a satirical lens for modern life. Through absurd humor and scientific speculation, the latest episodes tackle contemporary topics including the influence of major corporations, artificial intelligence, and workplace insecurity.
Satire and Academic Rigor
Unlike the domestic satire of The Simpsons, Futurama relies on a writing staff historically drawn from academic and scientific backgrounds. The writers combine intellectual rigor, physical and mathematical references, and emotional storytelling.
That balance between wild comedy and emotional storylines about loss and the passage of time has helped the series retain a dedicated audience throughout its various network moves. Over its broadcast history, the show has transitioned across multiple platforms after being cancelled several times.
Members of the writing team have held advanced degrees in mathematics, physics, and computer science. Writers on the show even developed a real mathematical theorem, known as the Futurama Theorem or Keeler's Theorem, specifically to resolve a plot line involving mind-swapping characters in an earlier season.
Voice Cast and Production
The current streaming run retains the show's original creative production team alongside its core English-language voice cast. Billy West, Katey Sagal, and John DiMaggio return to lead the vocal performances for the main crew of the Planet Express delivery ship.
Billy West provides the voices for multiple lead characters, including Fry, Professor Farnsworth, Dr. Zoidberg, and Captain Zapp Brannigan. Katey Sagal voices the one-eyed spaceship captain Turanga Leela, while John DiMaggio performs as the booze-powered robot Bender Bending Rodríguez.
The premiere marks another chapter in the survival of the sci-fi comedy, which originally aired on traditional television before finding a new home on digital streaming services. New episodes are scheduled to drop weekly on Disney+ as the ten-part season unfolds.
