Gerald Thomas Admitted to Intensive Care Unit in Brazil

Theatre director Gerald Thomas has been admitted to an intensive care unit in the northeastern Brazilian city of Sao Luis, Maranhao.

The 72-year-old playwright and director shared news of his condition on Saturday, October 31, in a short video recorded from his hospital bed and published to his Instagram account. He appeared lying down with medical monitoring electrodes attached to his chest.

In the video, Thomas said that he was being well treated in the intensive care unit of a hospital in the Maranhao state capital. He apologised to his followers for his silence, explaining that he had received thousands of messages from fans who were worried about his wellbeing.

Thomas did not disclose the medical issue that prompted his hospitalisation or explain why he required intensive care. He told viewers that he would continue to share updates whenever possible, concluding the message with his thanks and a kiss to his supporters in case he could not post again.

Support from Brazilian Artists

The video brought an immediate outpouring of concern and affection from followers, friends and theatrical colleagues across Brazil. Prominent entertainment figures quickly responded in the comments section to offer their support.

Actor and theatre director Miguel Falabella, actress Danielle Winits and television news presenter Chico Pinheiro were among the high-profile figures who left warm messages, wishing Thomas a complete and speedy recovery.

Experimental Theatre and Samuel Beckett

Thomas has forged an extensive international career spanning Brazil, Britain, Germany and the United States. He established a reputation as one of the most prominent avant-garde figures in contemporary theatre, creating provocative, non-linear productions marked by bold visual imagery and biting social commentary.

He developed his craft at the La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in New York City, an influential venue founded in 1961 by Ellen Stewart to champion unconventional stage performance. During his time at the East Village institution, Thomas focused on adapting and directing dramatic works and prose by the Irish Nobel laureate Samuel Beckett.

Major Brazilian Productions and Marriages

In Brazil, Thomas became famous for polarising, high-energy productions that pushed conventional theatrical boundaries. Over several decades, he directed many of the nation's most revered actors, including Fernanda Montenegro, Antonio Fagundes, Rubens Correa, Sergio Britto, Tonia Carrero, Marco Nanini and Italo Rossi.

Montenegro is widely regarded as the leading dame of Brazilian theatre and television, and made cinematic history as an Oscar nominee for Central Station. Thomas was previously married to Montenegro's daughter, the award-winning actress Fernanda Torres, as well as the filmmaker and stage designer Daniela Thomas.

An intensive care unit is a specialised hospital department designed to provide constant monitoring and critical life support for severe medical conditions. Hospital authorities in Sao Luis have not issued a clinical bulletin regarding his diagnosis, but Thomas told fans he will provide further news on his recovery as soon as he is able.
