Giovanna Lancellotti Cast as Carmen Miranda in New Biopic

Brazilian actress Giovanna Lancellotti has announced that she will star as singer Carmen Miranda in a new biographical film about the life and career of the Brazilian icon.

The announcement was first reported by Variety magazine on Tuesday, October 6, and was later confirmed by the 33-year-old actress across her official social media accounts.

Lancellotti takes over the role months after 25-year-old actress Larissa Manoela announced her departure from the cast due to conflicts in her filming schedule.

Writing on Instagram, Lancellotti stated that it was a deep honor, an immense responsibility, and a moment of great emotion to bring such a powerful figure to the screen. She described the role as a long-held dream that is now becoming reality after years of preparation.

Lancellotti revealed that she has dedicated her heart, love, and effort to the project since 2021, with the goal of allowing audiences to truly understand the woman behind the legend.

The actress shared a photograph from a themed photo shoot in which she appears dressed as Miranda, wearing a traditional Brazilian fruit hat alongside a colorful, patterned ensemble.

She also expressed gratitude to the creative team behind the production, highlighting director Esmir Filho for shaping the story of the star with truth and sensitivity. She added that Miranda was an artist ahead of her time who influenced culture, music, fashion, art, and cinema worldwide.

Lancellotti noted that Miranda carried the warmth, charisma, and colors of Brazil across international borders, showcasing the strength of the nation. She stated that the production team aims to honor Miranda, celebrate her legacy, and bring her story to life once again on film.

Following the announcement, numerous friends, fellow artists, and fans filled the comments section with messages of support, praising her appearance in character and wishing her success in the role.

Casting changes and schedule conflicts

The casting update follows the departure of Larissa Manoela, who was originally attached to play Miranda when the biopic was first announced. Manoela confirmed at the end of August that she had to step down because of scheduling conflicts.

According to an official statement released by Manoela's team, the decision not to continue came from the film's director. Upon learning that another production about Miranda was underway, the director chose to advance the shooting schedule, knowing Manoela already had prior professional commitments booked for those dates.

Manoela later addressed her followers on Instagram stories, sharing that she was very upset to leave the production but needed to make choices that honored her existing commitments. Her team added that while she regretted leaving, she maintained certainty that she acted with responsibility, respect, and consistency toward all involved professionals and her audience.

Despite online speculation suggesting a potential rivalry between the two performers, Manoela publicly congratulated Lancellotti in the comments of the announcement post.

Manoela wrote that she hoped the project would be beautiful, adding that Miranda deserves stories that accurately portray how extraordinary she was. She commended Lancellotti's appearance in character and expressed eagerness to watch the completed film.
