US residents Gordon Byatley, 101, and Eileen Byatley, 96, have celebrated 80 years of marriage after marrying on August 25, 1946.

The couple revealed the secrets behind their eight decades together during an interview with American broadcaster WOOD.

The elderly husband and wife explained that the key to a lasting relationship is very simple, citing communication, loyalty, honesty, faith, and the ability to have fun together.

Gordon noted that another secret to maintaining a strong bond is interweaving. He explained that staying together for decades requires partners to weave together their different upbringings and past experiences into a single life.

An 80th wedding anniversary is widely recognized as an oak anniversary. Reaching eight decades of marriage is an exceptionally rare milestone achieved by very few couples worldwide.

Teamwork and family life

Reflecting on their decades together, the couple stated that they worked as a team throughout their entire lives. While Gordon worked two jobs to support the family, Eileen maintained the household and raised their children.

Eileen offered direct advice for younger couples, explaining that no one should ever let anyone tell them that marriage is a 50 to 50 split. Instead, she said that a strong marriage requires 100 percent effort from both sides.

Even in their late nineties and hundreds, the couple continue to work together on shared projects. Gordon crafts wooden birdhouses, while Eileen paints them.

In their free time, the couple regularly visit church and go hiking together. They share a large family that includes five sons, along with several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Wartime romance and other milestones

The couple first met shortly before the outbreak of World War II. During the war years, millions of service members were deployed abroad, placing immense strain on relationships.

While Gordon served in the army, Eileen kept their bond strong by sending him letters every day. The couple were reunited after the conflict ended and were married in the summer of 1946.

Their celebration comes after another rare relationship milestone reported in Britain, where long-living couple Ray Boot and Wyn Boot celebrated 80 years of marriage.

Speaking about their own eight decades together, Wyn Boot revealed that the secret to a long marriage is simply love.
