The acclaimed feature film Hamnet has landed exclusively on streaming service SkyShowtime on Monday, August 24, bringing director Chloé Zhao's Shakespearean drama to subscribers.
Produced by Focus Features, the film adapts Northern Irish author Maggie O'Farrell's bestselling novel of the same name. The narrative bypasses traditional biographical storytelling to explore the domestic life of William Shakespeare, depicting a family torn apart by the loss of a child and showing how personal grief influenced the creation of his masterwork, Hamlet.
The historical Hamnet Shakespeare was the playwright's only son, who died in 1596 at the age of 11. Zhao, who directed the project, previously earned two Academy Awards for her 2020 film Nomadland, including Best Director and Best Picture.
Award wins and lead performances
Irish actor Paul Mescal portrays Shakespeare with an emotional restraint that avoids traditional period tropes. Co-star Jessie Buckley delivers a lead performance that earned her the Golden Globe award for Best Actress in a Drama.
Both lead actors have earned wide critical acclaim in recent years. Mescal gained international prominence in Normal People and received an Oscar nomination for Aftersun, while Buckley earned an Academy Award nomination for her role in The Lost Daughter.
The principal cast features veteran British actors Emily Watson and Joe Alwyn. Polish cinematographer Łukasz Żal, previously nominated for Oscars for his work on Ida and Cold War, managed the film's visual presentation.
