Hannah Waddingham stars in Ted Lasso season four premiere

Actress Hannah Waddingham returns to screens as Rebecca Welton in the fourth season of Ted Lasso, scheduled to premiere on August 5, 2026. The 52-year-old performer recently demonstrated her spontaneous nature on the Thames embankment in London, dancing and singing along to a street musician performing Kansas City among tourists. Waddingham described herself as a carefree sister to her cold screen persona, while lead actor Jason Sudeikis and show creators noted her ability to combine aristocratic posture with a complete lack of pathos.

Growing up in South London as the daughter of a river police officer and an opera singer, Waddingham said theatre was in her blood as she spent childhood wandering the London Coliseum where her mother performed. Her height of six feet two inches initially presented a major obstacle at auditions, where directors frequently told her that she was wanted for roles but a man had already been cast. The rejections prompted her to conclude that if she was not accepted into the corps de ballet, she would have to become a leading actress.

Early Theatre Career and Screen Breakthrough

Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber noticed 25-year-old Waddingham in 2000, praising her stage presence and star charisma before casting her in his musical The Beautiful Game and later as the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz in 2011. She earned three Olivier Award nominations by 2015 and showcased a four-octave vocal range in Broadway concert performances, although British agents initially struggled to market her as either a singer or a dramatic actress.

Becoming pregnant at age 38 led Waddingham to transition to screen acting due to the demanding schedules of live theatre. Nine weeks after giving birth to her daughter, she joined the fifth season of Game of Thrones as Septa Unella, shouting shame behind Cersei Lannister. Waddingham expressed pride in proving that musical theatre performers could succeed in screen close-ups, before appearing in Sex Education and landing her role in Ted Lasso in 2020, which co-creator Brendan Hunt called the most challenging casting decision on the show.

Ted Lasso Season Four and Career Choices

The fourth season of Ted Lasso opens in Kansas City, where Ted returned after three seasons in London. Rebecca travels to convince him to coach the Richmond women's team, initially clashing with assistant coach Alice, played by Tanya Reynolds. Waddingham explained that she acts by intuition and avoids reading script scenes featuring other characters, while co-star Juno Temple described her as a silly nut despite her striking appearance.

Following an Emmy Award win for her role in Ted Lasso, Waddingham hosted the Eurovision Song Contest and the Olivier Awards, while starring in an action series alongside Octavia Spencer and an Apple TV holiday special. The mother of a 12-year-old daughter actively rejects plastic surgery, stating she wants to control her face and feels calmer and more confident at 52 than at 30. Although she hopes to return to the stage, she recently declined a compelling theatre role to prioritize time with her child, stating that a career built on compromises holds no value.
