Howard Stern has secured a new television deal with streaming platform HBO Max after satellite radio network SiriusXM dropped his long-running Howard 101 channel. The 72-year-old radio presenter will stream content from his weekly show on the subscription video service under the new partnership.
According to a report by The Sun, HBO Max will take material recorded during Stern's weekly broadcasts and edit the footage into a standalone series. A source told the outlet that Stern will perform his live broadcasts strictly on Mondays, altering his traditional autumn return schedule.
"Stern will be doing the live shows strictly on Mondays," the source told the publication, explaining: "That’s why he isn’t starting this year on the Tuesday after Labor Day like he usually does."
An insider noted that the rigid timing is required for television production, stating: "This is a very strict schedule for him to be able to use that show’s video for HBO Max."
Under the new arrangement, the streaming service will "use the best of Stern’s three-hour live show each week, which will be condensed into either a 90-minute or an hour-long show to air on the subscription service later in the week."
Changes to SiriusXM Broadcast Schedule
The deal comes after SiriusXM confirmed that Stern's Howard 101 channel was dropped from its platform. The decision followed a wave of mass layoffs at the satellite company, which saw Stern's broadcast output scaled down to one new show per week in a move branded "ruthless."
Stern previously operated two dedicated channels on the network. Howard 100 featured his new live material, while Howard 101 served as the home for archival clips, classic segments, and vault material.
SiriusXM announced the lineup changes in a blog post on Friday, writing: "SiriusXM is updating its channel lineup beginning Sept. 1, with new channel numbers for a variety of sports, entertainment, comedy, news, talk, and music channels."
The company specified: "Among the most notable changes, Radio Andy moves from Ch. 102 to Ch. 101, while Howard 100 remains on Ch. 100 and Howard 101 leaves the lineup." Bravo boss Andy Cohen will replace Stern on channel 101 with his Radio Andy station.
Staff Layoffs and Reduced Output
It was revealed in July that Stern was preparing to scale down to one new show weekly this autumn, a decision that led the radio personality to lay off around 12 staff members.
An insider told Page Six at the time that the cuts occurred because "he just doesn’t need that much content anymore." The new schedule begins in the autumn when Stern returns from his summer vacation, while the remaining four days of the week will feature programmed past material.
Laid-off staff members were informed of the decision during a Zoom call on July 13, sources told Page Six, noting that employees were sent home immediately afterward. Staffers will be eligible for severance payments based on their length of service with SiriusXM.
The sharp decline in programming and staff drew strong reactions from longtime listeners last month. An X user with the handle @bringbackjackie, who live-blogs The Howard Stern Show, told the Daily Mail that the reduced output followed the departure of former SiriusXM chief executive Jim Meyer in 2020 and the 2024 death of Stern's longtime agent Don Buchwald.
Both departures were cited as critical factors that "only accelerated Stern's downfall" with the broadcaster, leading to "pay cuts," "less days worked" and downsizing of staff. Representatives for Stern and HBO Max have been contacted by the Daily Mail for comment.
