Isabel Díaz Ayuso, the president of the Community of Madrid, returned to her institutional schedule this week wearing one of the most original trouser looks from her autumn wardrobe. On Monday she opened the week's agenda with a visit to San Martín de Valdeiglesias, where she showed a sportier side of her style, dressed in practical basics suited to the natural surroundings.
Rather than reaching for one of her usual straight dresses or leather-effect skirts, Ayuso wore a technical outfit that would work equally well on the final days of a mountain holiday. The standout piece was a pair of convertible cargo trousers, a favourite among hiking enthusiasts, and her choice also pointed to cargo trousers as a key trend for autumn-winter 2026/27.
The perfect look for Ayuso's return to work
Those who have followed Ayuso's style know she typically favours basic, timeless pieces that are easy to combine, in classic silhouettes that flatter without clinging, and in a neutral palette that avoids drawing too much attention.
For this outdoor engagement, comfort came first. Ayuso completed her outfit with a basic french-sleeve t-shirt, beige convertible trousers and sneakers. More formal looks, such as Zara blouses, oversized blazers or tailored trousers, are likely to reappear as her schedule continues, but for this last week of August she chose the same relaxed register still favoured by many people finishing their holidays in the mountains.
The Decathlon convertible trousers that turn into shorts
The most talked-about item in Ayuso's outfit was her beige convertible trousers from Decathlon, the French sporting goods retailer. Normally associated with hiking or outdoor activities, the trousers proved a sensible choice for the occasion, but they also work well beyond it, whether paired with smarter pieces for the office or worn on a city break, thanks to their comfort and versatility.
Zips above the knee allow the legs to be removed entirely, turning the trousers into shorts, while zips on the sides let them open out into flared trousers, giving the garment several different configurations for the shifting temperatures of the season. The trousers are currently on sale for 35 euros, down 12 percent from 40 euros, and are available in both beige and black.
Ayuso's most original sneakers
Ayuso completed the look with a pair of Nike sneakers on sale for 72 euros. Alongside heeled boots and loafers, sneakers also have a place in her wardrobe, and this model stood out as one of her more original choices, with a sporty, modern design well suited to Monday's engagement.
The trainers are the Nike Air Zoom Bella 7, now available in several colours with a 20 percent discount. Ayuso chose the most basic version, in cream with a gold logo.
Ayuso, a member of the conservative Partido Popular, has led the Madrid regional government since 2019. San Martín de Valdeiglesias, the venue for Monday's visit, is a municipality in the Sierra Oeste west of the Spanish capital.
