Andy Muschietti, co-creator of IT: Welcome to Derry, has confirmed the creative team is already writing the second season of the HBO Max prequel series based on Stephen King's universe.
Unlike the first season, which was set in the 1960s, the new episodes will jump back to the 1930s. Muschietti said the new storyline will center on the Bradley Gang Massacre, an event mentioned in King's original IT novel.
The plot will follow a group of outlaws hiding from the FBI in Derry, whose arrival triggers a wave of robberies and killings that plunges the town into chaos. Muschietti said the series will explore the harsh backdrop of the Great Depression, showing characters forced into extreme choices to survive.
Pennywise returns amid social conflict
Bill Skarsgård will again play Pennywise. Beyond the supernatural terror the character represents, Muschietti said the season will dig into the social conflicts and economic hardship of the era, reflecting the darker side of human nature.
Setting up a possible third season
Muschietti said the 1930s setting will help expand the town's history and lay the groundwork for a possible third season. Just as the first season referenced past events in Derry, the new episodes could introduce historical incidents such as the 1908 explosion at the Kitchener Ironworks, another tragic episode tied to Pennywise's cycle of appearances.
Following the success of the first season, which was well received by critics and audiences, IT: Welcome to Derry aims to raise the stakes with a darker tone and a story blending supernatural horror with the drama of one of the most difficult periods in American history.
