Brazilian filmmaker Jorge Furtado, 67, has returned to comedy feature films with the premiere of his latest movie, Muito Prazer, which opened in cinemas across Brazil this week after a hiatus of nearly 20 years from the genre.
Speaking about the release, Furtado declared that comedic cinema remains widely undervalued by audiences and critics alike, arguing that humor holds equal artistic value to drama and tragedy.
Furtado explained that his desire to direct Muito Prazer stemmed directly from his personal passion for the genre. He noted that he frequently searches for good comedy films to watch, describing the discovery of a quality entry as a genuine relief.
According to the veteran director, a strong comedy goes far beyond generating simple laughs. He stated that audiences learn and find entertainment through humor, which offers viewers characters whose human flaws make them deeply relatable.
Flawed Characters and Everyday Struggles
Furtado contrasted comedic protagonists with mythological and comic book figures. Unlike heroes such as Ulysses, Superman, or Spider-Man, comedic leads are defined by their flaws and everyday problems, particularly financial burdens and family conflicts.
The filmmaker stressed that characters who worry about making money to pay monthly bills feel fundamentally human. He expressed a strong fondness for such protagonists, adding that creating characters whom the audience can root for has always guided his storytelling.
Furtado is one of Brazil's most celebrated cinematic storytellers. Based in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, he helped found the influential production collective Casa de Cinema de Porto Alegre in the late 1980s. He gained widespread international recognition for his acclaimed 1989 documentary short Isle of Flowers, which won awards at the Berlin International Film Festival, before directing major feature films including Houve uma Vez Dois Verões in 2002.
From Local Politics to the Internet Economy
Furtado pointed to earlier highlights in his filmography, recalling how characters like Zico and Joaquim in his 2007 comedy Saneamento Básico, O Filme won over audiences through their determination. He also previously explored youth comedic drama in his 2004 feature Meu Tio Matou um Cara.
While Saneamento Básico focused on local political bureaucracy and community organization in a small town, Muito Prazer shifts focus to a modern setting dominated by the internet. Furtado explained that the new movie examines the contemporary struggle to monetize online activities and earn a living through digital sales.
Muito Prazer stars acclaimed Brazilian actor Daniel de Oliveira, known for his award-winning portrayal of rock singer Cazuza in the 2004 biographical film Cazuza: O Tempo Não Pára. The film enters Brazilian theaters at a time when domestic comedies continue to represent a major cornerstone of national film production.
Comedy as the Affirmation of Life
Furtado observed that financial anxiety is a recurring theme in comedic storytelling because money connects directly to fundamental human desires and practical survival. That connection led him to formulate a broader philosophical definition of the genre.
Comparing narrative structures, Furtado observed that while tragedy inevitably moves toward death, comedy points toward the continuation of life through happy endings. He summarized the distinction by noting that tragedy ends in death, whereas comedy ends in marriage and a kiss.
