American rapper Kanye West, also known as Ye, is scheduled to perform two concerts at the Gazprom Arena in Saint Petersburg on October 10 and 11.
The upcoming dates were announced in a post published on the Telegram channel of the Gazprom Arena. The venue serves as the home stadium for Russian Premier League football club Zenit Saint Petersburg and can accommodate approximately 70,000 spectators.
If the concerts take place as planned, West will be one of the highest-profile international music stars to visit Russia since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Major Western musical acts largely ceased touring in Russia after the conflict began, making international concert appearances in the country rare.
Ticket sales and venue pricing
Interest in the American musician's upcoming appearances was evident during the first hours of ticket availability. According to Russian state news agency TASS, admission prices started at 9,000 roubles, equivalent to about 106 dollars. The lowest-priced tickets sold out within just one hour of release.
At the upper end of the price scale, the most expensive tickets for the Saint Petersburg venue reach up to 160,000 roubles, or approximately 1,885 dollars. The Gazprom Arena, located on Krestovsky Island in Saint Petersburg, is one of Russia's largest sports and entertainment facilities.
Controversies and European concert cancellations
The announcement of the Russian performances comes after a period in which West faced severe public backlash over a series of antisemitic statements. European countries cancelled or prohibited his concerts and public appearances earlier this year following comments in which he praised Adolf Hitler and displayed Nazi symbols.
West issued an apology in January for those remarks. He attributed his behavior in part to an undiagnosed brain injury and to bipolar disorder, stating that he was not receiving treatment for the condition at the time.
West has won 24 Grammy Awards and achieved international prominence with albums such as The College Dropout. Despite the ongoing controversies surrounding his public statements, consumer interest in the two Saint Petersburg concerts remains high, as demonstrated by the rapid sellout of the cheapest tickets.
