Catherine, Princess of Wales, made an emotional visit to the Royal Marsden Hospital in London, the hospital where she was treated after being diagnosed with cancer. This time she was not a patient but a supporter of people continuing their own difficult journeys with the disease.
During the visit, the princess met doctors, nurses and hospital staff, as well as patients taking part in holistic care programmes or currently undergoing treatment.
Her personal connection to Royal Marsden
Catherine announced in March 2024 that she had been diagnosed with cancer, without revealing the type of the disease. After months of preventive chemotherapy, she announced in January 2025 that the illness was in remission.
Since then, she has gradually returned to public engagements, often choosing to speak about her own experience and the difficulties faced by patients and their families. Her presence at the Royal Marsden carried particular weight, since it is the hospital where she received part of her treatment.
'My own way of saying thank you'
During the visit, Catherine spoke about the care she received from the hospital's medical team, stressing the importance not only of medical treatment but also of psychological and overall support.
She said the visit was her own small way of being able to give something back and say thank you. She described the care she had received as incredible and said the support surrounding a patient can play a decisive role in the course of treatment.
The importance of holistic care for cancer patients
Catherine placed particular emphasis on the value of a holistic approach, noting that elements such as contact with nature, good nutrition and emotional support can make a real difference.
She said that nature, good food and the support of those around you make a big difference when it is genuinely hard to cope with the trials and difficulties of medical treatment. She added that such an approach can be transformative, not only for patients but also for their families.
A challenge dedicated to Royal Marsden
The visit comes a few months after another symbolic gesture from Catherine. In June 2026, she completed the Three Peaks Challenge, climbing three of the highest peaks in the United Kingdom to raise money for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.
She had described the effort as a personal way of giving something back to an organisation that stood by her during the difficult period of her illness.
During her visit to the Royal Marsden, Catherine appeared smiling and visibly moved, underlining how her experience with cancer has changed the way she views health, care and the strength of human support.
