Katey Sagal celebrated "40 years of continuous sobriety" on Saturday night, sharing an Instagram slideshow of the milestone after previously revealing she started drinking and using drugs at age 15.

The 72-year-old Golden Globe winner, who has 2.6 million social media followers, posted photos of her alcohol- and drug-free celebration, which included a large cake, cookies and flower bouquets.

Sagal wrote that she felt "beyond grateful" to be "surrounded by like-minded friends" on the occasion, adding, "It's a wonderful life."

In the comments section, Sagal's eldest child, Sarah Grace White, 32, posted a red heart emoji and wrote, "Love you."

Sagal was joined in the celebration by White, her 30-year-old son Jackson, from her six-year marriage to second husband Jack White, and her 19-year-old daughter Esme, whom she welcomed via surrogate with third husband Kurt Sutter.

Sagal called her three children the "three loves of my life" and praised Sutter, 66, the showrunner of Abandons, as "amazing" for his support during their 21-year marriage. Sagal and Sutter, who began dating in 2002, also co-founded the motorcycle roadwear clothing brand Skull Petal.

The Khorus Harmonia singer also received congratulatory messages from Audrina Patridge, Robert Patrick, Lisa Ling, Jaimie Alexander and Annabeth Gish, as well as David Faustino, who played her onscreen son on Married... with Children. Faustino wrote, "Great times! And congrats again Katey."

The Daily Mail reported it had reached out to Sagal's representative for comment but did not immediately hear back.

The Khorus Harmonia singer told the MeSsy podcast last year: 'The brave part of living a sober life is that life's f***ing terrifying. And you got to look at it. What I have found around community, around all that, is I know lots of people that have walked through everything I've walked through'

Sagal on getting sober

Sagal discussed her path to sobriety on the MeSsy podcast last year, saying that for roughly the first 30 years of her life she avoided dealing with her problems and instead medicated herself to escape her emotions.

She said her parents died and she had cancer in her twenties, describing a string of hardships she did not properly confront until she stopped medicating herself and was forced to deal with them.

Sagal said that living sober takes courage because life is frightening and has to be faced directly. She said that through community she has met many people who have gone through the same experiences she has, and that the opposite of addiction is community.



Career and upcoming projects

Sagal currently voices the one-eyed mutant captain Turanga Leela in the 11th season of Matt Groening's animated sci-fi sitcom Futurama, which resumes next Sunday on Hulu.



Her upcoming projects include Rachel Lambert's romantic drama Carousel, an untitled comedy series for Apple TV from Elizabeth Banks, and an untitled sitcom pilot for NBC from Kari Lizer.

Sagal is best known for playing Peggy Bundy in Michael G. Moye and Ron Leavitt's sitcom Married... with Children, which ran for 11 seasons on Fox from 1987 to 1997.



She has also starred in ABC's Rebel, Showtime's Shameless, CBS' Superior Donuts, FX's The Bastard Executioner, NBC's A to Z, FX's Sons of Anarchy, ABC's Boston Legal, ABC's 8 Simple Rules and CBS' Mary.

Sagal's godfather was the late Norman Lear, the producer and creator behind hit sitcoms including All in the Family, Maude, Sanford and Son, One Day at a Time, The Jeffersons and Good Times.

A CalArts dropout, Sagal began her career as a backup singer for artists including Bob Dylan, Bette Midler, Gene Simmons and Tanya Tucker. She currently draws 81,713 monthly listeners on Spotify.
