Katy Perry has opened up about her painful split from actor Orlando Bloom and finding a legendary new romance with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
The 41-year-old singer confirmed her breakup with Bloom, 49, in July 2025 during the Australian leg of her Lifetimes Tour. The couple began dating in 2016 and were together for nearly a decade, separating briefly in 2017 before getting engaged and welcoming their daughter, Daisy Dove, who is now six.
Speaking to People magazine, the One That Got Away singer revealed the emotional toll of the separation while she was travelling away from home.
"It was probably the hardest time," she told the publication. "My friends were all hanging out back home. I was crying and just feeling far away. But then my angels went to work. They really showed up."
Perry, who recently paid tribute to the inspiring Dolly Parton, explained that she had to push through her emotions to continue performing following her breakup from the Pirates of the Caribbean star.
"I learned how to step back into my purpose," Perry said. "And I got the greatest gift from this tour: I got to meet the love of my life."
Meeting Trudeau on tour
Perry met Trudeau, 54, during her tour stop in Montreal on July 28, just weeks after her split from Bloom was made public on July 4.
"I got to meet Justin on tour, and then things shifted," she explained.
She reflected on her relationship with Bloom, who is now dating 28-year-old Swiss model Luisa Laemmel.
"I wouldn't have stayed in something for nine years if there wasn't really important things to learn," Perry said. "Each relationship is a teacher, right? I had to let it go so I could move forward."
The singer shared that she had previously spoken to her therapist about wanting an "epic legendary love," noting that everything else in her life was epic, but that connection felt like a "missing puzzle piece, then it showed up."
The mother of one, who has been nominated for 13 Grammys but has not yet won, shared a piece of paper with the magazine. Item number ten on the list simply read: "True love."
"No. 10 just says, 'True Love.' And I think that's where we're at," she told People.
A different level of support
Perry praised the support she receives from the former prime minister while attending the Los Angeles screening of her new concert film, Katy Perry: The Lifetimes Tour Live from Paris.
"He's just there to support," she told Entertainment Tonight. "I've had, you know, people come to my shows before and partners and support in their own way but this is definitely a different level."
She described a moment that clinched the relationship with Trudeau, which occurred when she performed her 2010 song Not Like the Movies while he was in the audience. The track is about refusing to settle for an unfulfilling relationship and waiting for someone who matches your energy in a surprising way.
"I sang Not Like the Movies when he was at the show and it is his favorite song and I was like, I can't believe I'm singing this and I wrote this so long ago, and I think I wrote this about us," she said.
"And this is such a weird full circle mystical, magical moment. Like, time doesn't really exist in the other place. Right? And so it's wild that it all kinda came together in this way."
When asked if Not Like the Movies is a love song, Perry confirmed that it is.
"Oh, it totally is. My world has stopped spinning," she said.
Nerves in Montreal
Perry admitted to Us Weekly that performing in Montreal and knowing Trudeau was watching made her unusually nervous.
"I always create a super special fan experience, but I don't typically get nervous," she told the outlet. "Maybe I get some butterflies on the first show because it's all the things coming together, and because of social media, you want to kind of get it right."
She suggested fans might notice her nerves in upcoming documentary footage from the tour.
"But in Montreal, you know, this is the tour. This is the Lifetimes Tour," she continued. "When the documentary comes, y'all might see me in a different way because... in Montreal, I was like, 'I can't look at him.' A lot of energy."
Perry was previously married to British comedian Russell Brand from 2010 to 2012, a marriage he famously ended via text message. She subsequently dated singer John Mayer on and off between 2012 and 2015, and was briefly linked to DJ and producer Diplo in 2014.
Trudeau was previously married to Sophie Gregoire. The former couple share three children: Xavier, 18, Ella-Grace, 17, and Hadrien, 12.
