Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys arrived at the Emmy Awards with deliberately opposite hairstyles, one pulled into a mirror-smooth bun and the other left loose and curly, according to the hairstylist who created both looks.
Campbell gave Russell a sleek bun that traced the clean lines of her backless black leather Khaite gown, while giving her partner Rhys a looser finish that preserved his natural curl above his Thom Browne tuxedo.

"For Keri's look tonight we wanted to do something clean and sleek. With the sleekness of her dress we thought it would work well towards the overall look," Campbell said.
Russell was nominated for outstanding lead actress in a drama series for playing diplomat Kate Wyler on Netflix's The Diplomat. Rhys won outstanding lead actor in a comedy series for Widow's Bay and outstanding lead actor in a limited or anthology series or movie for The Beast in Me, making him the first male actor to win two lead acting Emmys in the same year.

Keri Russell's Sleek Bun
Campbell said the bun started at the roots rather than at the elastic. He sprayed RŌZ Root Lift Volumizing Hair Styling Spray, $42, through Russell's hair, then used a Mason Pearson flat brush and a Dyson hair dryer to blow it straight and backward.
The alcohol-free spray adds light, touchable hold at the roots, which Campbell used to train Russell's hair away from her face during the blow-dry so every strand had the same direction before he formed the ponytail. The flat brush created tension to pull the hair taut and smooth its surface as it dried.

He then followed the same backward path with a ghd Chronos Styler, $359, a one-inch flat iron that holds its plates at 365 degrees and adjusts power as it moves through the hair.
Campbell said this mattered most at the roots, where any bend would interrupt the slick line running from Russell's forehead to the bun. "The most important step is definitely the blow dry and flat ironing to set the root direction with the blowdry and lock in sleekness and shine with the flat iron," he said.

Building the Ponytail and Bun
A few drops of RŌZ Santa Lucia Heat Protectant Styling Hair Oil, $45, helped Campbell gather Russell's hair into a tight ponytail. The lightweight oil smooths frizz and adds shine without the harder finish of gel, and Campbell applied it after the heat work to keep the strands lying together evenly.
He then worked four pumps of RŌZ Milk Hydrating Leave-In Conditioner Hair Serum, $52, through the ponytail before twisting it into a bun and securing it with hairpins. The silicone-free serum detangles, softens and controls frizz, keeping the length pliable enough to twist into a compact coil while preventing shorter ends from breaking through the shape.

Campbell finished the fine detail work with RŌZ Evergreen Hair Styling Cream, $32, using just a dab to press flyaways into the style around the hairline and bun without adding a stiff, heavy layer.
The final touch was Parfums de Marly Valaya Hair Perfume, $97, a light mist made for hair that carries notes of bergamot, mandarin and white peach into orange blossom, white flowers, musk and wood. Campbell sprayed it on once the style was fully set, adding scent without disturbing the sleek finish.

Matthew Rhys's Natural Curls
"For Matthew's hair inspiration we wanted to work with his natural texture and give it a bit of a loose feel," Campbell said.
He brushed through Rhys's hair with a Bur Bur Mermaid Brush, $58, which combines boar bristles with nylon pins, then worked in a few drops of Bur Bur Growing Season Botanical Hair Treatment Oil, $56.

Growing Season is sold as a weekly pre-shampoo treatment, but Campbell used a small amount to smooth, polish and define Rhys's dry hair. The blend of plant oils gave his curls separation and shine while letting them keep their loose shape, with the brush's nylon pins moving through the hair as its bristles spread the oil across the strands.
Campbell then attached a diffuser to a Dyson Supersonic Nural Hair Dryer, $449, and dried Rhys's hair around its natural bends. The wide attachment spread the airflow across the curls so they dried in their existing pattern rather than being blown apart.
He finished by shaking the hair out with his hands and adding another few drops of the Bur Bur oil to sharpen the texture and add shine.
