Singer Lana Del Rey has shared a video of herself handing cash to a woman seeking help to leave an abusive relationship in Los Angeles.
The musician, aged 41, filmed the unexpected encounter from inside her vehicle, where a pedestrian approached her car window and displayed a handwritten sign asking for financial assistance to escape a toxic domestic situation.
Del Rey was stopped at a red traffic light on Highland Avenue, a major roadway in the city, when she spotted the plea. After seeing the sign, the singer opened her handbag, took out a sum of cash, and passed it directly to the woman outside.
When the pedestrian expressed gratitude for the money, Del Rey urged her to stay away from the man and told her to take care of herself. Del Rey also observed that the woman did not appear to recognize who was helping her.
Video shared on social media
Del Rey posted the footage to her social media channels, recounting the timing of the encounter. She explained that she had been filming herself singing along to Canadian pop singer Tate McRae's track Rubberband when the woman placed the sign against her window.
The singer highlighted the eerie coincidence of listening to McRae's song referencing Highland while physically stationary at a red light on that exact street. McRae's track explores the painful aftermath of a romantic breakup and the emotional difficulty of moving on from a former partner.
Del Rey, born Elizabeth Woolridge Grant, rose to international prominence with her 2012 breakthrough album Born to Die and has become known for her cinematic pop music and retro American aesthetic. McRae is an acclaimed Canadian pop artist and dancer who gained global fame with emotional radio hits.
Marriage to Jeremy Dufrene
The charitable interaction on the streets of California comes during a settled period in Del Rey's personal life. The singer has been married to American alligator tour guide Jeremy Dufrene since 2024.
Rumours of a romantic relationship between the pair first circulated online in 2024, after the singer shared an image on Instagram referring to Dufrene as her guy. The couple had already known one another for five years before tying the knot.
Dufrene previously captained an airboat tour for Del Rey and her friends in 2019 through the Louisiana bayous, where he works taking tourists into swamp habitats to observe wildlife. The singer had documented that excursion at the time by posting photographs on her official Facebook page.
