The Russian animated-adventure film "The Last Warrior: Kolobok" has earned more than 1 billion rubles at the box office, according to data from the Unified Automated Information System (EAIS), which tracks Russian cinema receipts. The film reached the milestone on September 13, in its sixth week of release after premiering on August 6.
The film currently ranks fourth on the Russian box office charts, trailing three other releases. It is the eighth Russian film to pass the 1-billion-ruble mark in 2026, following "Cheburashka 2," "Prostokvashino," "Buratino," "The Tale of Tsar Saltan," "The Maid," "Michael" and "Kholop 3."
"Kolobok" tells the backstory of the title character, a figure from traditional Russian folklore who is baked from dough, comes to life and rolls away from those who made him, in a tale often compared to the English-language story of the Gingerbread Man. The film follows the character as he is baked and flees, falls in with a band of robbers, and eventually teams up with an unlucky baker named Tikhon.
Cast and director
Comedian Garik Kharlamov again provides the voice of the lead character, having previously voiced him in "The Last Warrior: Root of Evil." Actors Dmitry Zhuravlyov and Mila Ershova also returned to their roles. The film was directed by Anton Maslov, one of the creators of the series "The Last Warrior: Legacy," part of the wider Last Warrior franchise that blends Russian fairy-tale characters with modern fantasy adventure.
Pre-release controversy
The film was caught up in controversy before its release, after Russian cinemas postponed the unofficial premiere of the comic-book film "Spider-Man: New Day" to make way for "Kolobok." "Spider-Man: New Day" was ultimately released in Russia on August 20. According to media reports, the director and lead voice actor of "Kolobok" subsequently received threats from unidentified individuals on social media, and a criminal case was opened against the users involved.
