Apple Spas, which coincides with the Christian holiday of the Transfiguration of the Lord, is a major folk and religious celebration across Russia. On this day, fresh apples are brought to church for blessing, used in homemade desserts and drinks, and shared with family, friends and neighbors.

Sverdlova said the holiday offers a fitting opportunity to send digital greetings to relatives and loved ones, wishing them happiness and a peaceful start to autumn. The collection published on Lenta.ru features multiple categories, including Orthodox cards, folk designs, aesthetic illustrations, warm festive wishes and card designs featuring poetry.

The collection includes illustrations generated by Nano Banana Pro depicting seasonal themes. Sverdlova wrote that as August draws to an end, the holiday serves as a reminder that sharing joy with loved ones around a quiet table is more valuable than preparing winter stocks.

Religious Significance of the Transfiguration

Orthodox Christians celebrate three Saviour holidays in August, known in popular tradition as Honey Spas, Apple Spas and Nut Spas. These names are folk designations rather than official church calendar titles. Apple Spas takes place on the fixed date of August 19, coinciding with the Transfiguration of the Lord.

According to Gospel accounts, Jesus Christ took three of his apostles, Peter, John and James, to Mount Tabor 40 days before his crucifixion on Golgotha. While praying on the mountain, Jesus transfigured before them, his face shining like the sun, while the Old Testament prophets Moses and Elijah appeared alongside him.

The divine manifestation proved the divinity of Jesus to his disciples, who were commanded not to reveal what they had seen until after his resurrection. In Orthodox theology, the event, also known in folk tradition as Spas on the Mountain, serves as a reminder that human beings are capable of spiritual transformation despite earthly hardship and evil.

August marks the main apple harvest period, when fruit preparations for winter begin. In ancient times, believers refrained from eating apples before they were blessed in church on Spas day. Today, that strict prohibition applies to monks rather than laypeople.

The holiday falls during the Dormition Fast, which is one of the strictest fasting periods in the Orthodox calendar, forbidding meat, fish, dairy products and eggs. However, church rules allow a mild relaxation on Apple Spas, permitting believers to consume fish and oil.

Church celebrations begin on the evening preceding Transfiguration with special evening services. On the morning of August 19, priests conduct the festive liturgy, a solemn cross procession and the consecration of apples, grapes and wheat ears. Following the service, believers share the blessed fruit with the sick, the needy, children and neighbors.

Traditional Customs and Apple Recipes

Alongside religious observances, Apple Spas is associated with long standing folk customs. Historically, people refrained from heavy housework such as sewing or cleaning on the day, dedicating their time instead to prayer and family gatherings.

The holiday also marks the transition into autumn. Following Apple Spas, people traditionally began preparing for colder weather and attempted to forecast January weather patterns based on environmental signs. A traditional memorial custom involved leaving blessed fruit on the graves of deceased relatives, particularly children, though church authorities view this as a secular superstition.

To celebrate the occasion, the Lenta.ru guide highlights nine traditional apple dishes and treats. The recipes include classic charlotte pie made with cinnamon and optional additions of nuts or raisins, as well as cored apples baked with honey, walnuts and cinnamon.

Other featured recipes include apple jam flavored with lemon and cinnamon, soft pancakes made with grated apples added to the batter, and compote spiced with cloves, cinnamon and lemon peel.

The guide also details apple crumble, consisting of baked apples beneath a crispy topping of flour, butter and sugar, alongside soft yeast cinnamon rolls filled with apple and cinnamon.

For lighter options, the publication recommends a salad of grated apples and carrots dressed with honey and lemon juice, as well as dehydrated apple chips baked until crisp as a healthy fasting snack.
