It is possible that it appears in some phases of the menstrual period or the female reproductive cycle. Doubts on the subject
Discharges of different shades, textures and smells become a drama when we don’t understand what they mean. While some are common and even expected, others sometimes signal that there is something wrong with the body and that it is important to seek medical attention for further evaluation. Pinkish discharge, for example, is normal in most cases where it appears. However, depending on the associated symptoms, it may indicate a problem that needs to be identified and treated with the help of a specialist.

“Discharge can change color and texture during your menstrual cycle and your pink discharge could be a sign of ovulationthat is, when the egg is released from the ovary and moves through the genital tract,” explains gynecologist and obstetrician Fabio Muniz, medical coordinator of the Hospital e Maternidade São Cristóvão Saúde (SP) and member of the Sociedade Paulista de Ginecologia e Obstetricia.
It is also possible that it is caused by a small amount of blood mixed with vaginal mucus, common for some women. “However, if the pink discharge is accompanied by other symptoms, such as itching or an unpleasant odor, it is important to consult a doctor to evaluate the cause and prescribe the appropriate treatment,” emphasizes the specialist.
pink discharge in pregnancy
In general, any changes during pregnancy worry the mother – and this is understandable. There is a possibility that pinkish discharge may appear at different stages of pregnancy, but it is not always an indication that something is wrong.. “In the beginning, pink discharge can be caused by the implantation of the embryo in the uterine lining,” says the gynecologist. According to him, this tends to occur 6 to 12 days after conception and is likely to be mistaken for light menstrual bleeding.
When it appears towards the end, in the last few weeks, it is possible that it is a sign of preterm birth or premature rupture of the amniotic membranescausing the leakage of amniotic fluid. “In these cases, it is essential to seek medical assistance immediately, as this can put the health of the mother and the baby at risk,” differentiates Muniz.
“Pink discharge during pregnancy can also be caused by vaginal infections — such as vaginitis — that need to be treated to avoid complications,” she points out. If in doubt, always ask the opinion of your trusted obstetrician. He will know whether or not the situation deserves further evaluation.
Can pink discharge be a sign of pregnancy?
Some tempters create anticipation when they notice this sign, but, in reality, pink discharge by itself is not a reliable indication of pregnancy – unless it occurs at the same time as other symptoms such as delayed periods, abdominal pain or sore nipples.
“In general, pregnancy is confirmed by a pregnancy test, which detects the presence of hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in the urine. Yes, hCG is a hormone produced by the placenta and is a reliable indicator,” she says the obstetrician.
Could pink discharge be a sign of miscarriage?
“Abortion is the spontaneous termination of pregnancy before the 20th week and can in fact be indicated by pink or brown discharge, associated with abdominal pain or uterine contractions,” she says. “In some cases, the discharge can be caused by fetal or placental tissue being pushed out of the uterus,” she explains. In case of suspicion, it is again recommended to seek help from an expert.
Pink discharge after intercourse
According to Muniz, it is possible that pinkish discharge after sex is the result of irritation of the vaginal lining or the introduction of bacteria into the vagina during intercourse. “However, it can also be a sign of a sexually transmitted infection (STI), such as gonorrhea or chlamydia. In addition to secretions, infections can cause pain when urinating and pelvic pain,” points out the gynecologist.
If it persists or is accompanied by other symptoms, such as abdominal pain or itching, raise the alert. Early treatment helps avoid complications and prevent passing the infection on to others.
Pink discharge before or after menstruation
Some of the more common causes are:
- Ovulation: after the egg is released, the wall of the ovary can rupture, causing pinkish discharge.
- Vaginal infections: in some cases it is a consequence, for example, of candidiasis or trichomoniasis (accompanied by an unpleasant odor and itching).
- Hormonal changes: changes such as those that occur during menopause can cause pinkish discharge.
- Vaginal injuries: sometimes it appears due to irritation or cuts in the region.
- Pregnancy: when it occurs together with menstrual delay, it can be a sign of pregnancy, but must be accompanied by other symptoms. Confirmation should be done with a Beta hCG test.
