While some are common and even expected, others sometimes signal that there is something wrong with the body and that it is important to seek medical attention for further evaluation. “Pink discharge during pregnancy can also be caused by vaginal infections — such as vaginitis — that need to be treated to avoid complications,” she points out. If in doubt, always ask the opinion of your trusted obstetrician. He will know whether or not the situation deserves further evaluation.

Can pink discharge be a sign of pregnancy?

Some tempters create anticipation when they notice this sign, but, in reality, pink discharge by itself is not a reliable indication of pregnancy – unless it occurs at the same time as other symptoms such as delayed periods, abdominal pain or sore nipples.

“In general, pregnancy is confirmed by a pregnancy test, which detects the presence of hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in the urine. Yes, hCG is a hormone produced by the placenta and is a reliable indicator,” she says the obstetrician.

“Abortion is the spontaneous termination of pregnancy before the 20th week and can in fact be indicated by pink or brown discharge, associated with abdominal pain or uterine contractions,” she says. “In some cases, the discharge can be caused by fetal or placental tissue being pushed out of the uterus,” she explains. Pink discharge after intercourse

According to Muniz, it is possible that pinkish discharge after sex is the result of irritation of the vaginal lining or the introduction of bacteria into the vagina during intercourse. “However, it can also be a sign of a sexually transmitted infection (STI), such as gonorrhea or chlamydia. In addition to secretions, infections can cause pain when urinating and pelvic pain,” points out the gynecologist.

If it persists or is accompanied by other symptoms, such as abdominal pain or itching, raise the alert. Early treatment helps avoid complications and prevent passing the infection on to others.

Pink discharge before or after menstruation

Some of the more common causes are:

• Ovulation: after the egg is released, the wall of the ovary can rupture, causing pinkish discharge.
• Vaginal infections: in some cases it is a consequence, for example, of candidiasis or trichomoniasis (accompanied by an unpleasant odor and itching).
• Hormonal changes: changes such as those that occur during menopause can cause pinkish discharge.
• Vaginal injuries: sometimes it appears due to irritation or cuts in the region.
