The goal of feeding the world in a safe, responsible and sustainable way has motivated Cargill to support social and economic development actions in various regions of the country. One of the most recent is the partnership with the Alto Xingu Women’s School of Entrepreneurship project, carried out together with the Association of Women Producers of Fruit Pulp (AMPPF), which in 2022 reached the milestone of 50 members, mostly female partner producers of the action.
With the aim of generating work, income and improving the quality of life in São Félix do Xingu, in Pará, the project strengthens family farming and trains young people and women in entrepreneurship.
The initiative is carried out in collaboration with the Institute of Forestry and Agricultural Management and Certification (Imaflora), through the Florestas de Valor program, and the Camppax cooperative, with a specific action plan. The proposal is to look for improvement opportunities for the Association and to develop a business plan and other management tools for the enterprise.
Support to the agro-industry of the region
The support of agro-industry has been essential to valorise opportunities like this, which offer space for women to develop, study and establish their own space as entrepreneurs, enabling their own income, independence and empowerment.
“At Associação, we have developed an approach to avoid waste and understand how we can get the most out of the collected pulp. Today we process the pulp from which we produce, for example, liqueurs, jellies and candied fruit”, points out Maria Helena Gomes, AMPPF associate.
“Through the training of young people and women in entrepreneurship, it has been possible to have a skilled workforce and a sustainable productive activity, generating work, income and allowing these families to stay in the countryside”, underlines Henrique de Souza, project manager in the team of Cargill’s sustainability.
Professionalization and consultancy
The professionalization actions also include knowledge of the correct treatment of the region for planting seedlings, the correct use for the generation of income with handicraft products and education and consultancy regarding the cultivation of this territory.
With advice and technical support, Cargill also contributes to reforestation and environmental adaptation in the region, as the program includes actions to preserve standing wood and recover degraded areas from seedling nursery implementation and enrichment of agroforestry courtyards.
