The otolaryngologist explains what factors can lead to anosmia, a condition in which the patient almost or completely loses his sense of smell
Anosmia is the complete or partial loss of smell – a symptom which, incidentally, has been reported during the Covid-19 pandemic as an indication of the disease. However, the condition is not only associated with the coronavirus, but also with other inflammatory processes, such as rhinitis, sinusitis or even colds.
Anosmia and loss of smell
According to otolaryngologist Dr. Mohamad Saada, anosmia can be a symptom of a health problem or the result of an external factor. Among them, the expert mentions:
- Aging of the olfactory nerve fibers;
- Nasal polyps, odor molecules cannot reach the nerve fiber;
- Head trauma, lesion and section of nerve fibers;
- Heavy metal poisoning;
- Exposure to volatile chemicals.
In case of flu and cold, the picture of anosmia is transient. However, in other situations the condition can become permanent. “It depends on the cause, and there are many. For example, if it’s due to trauma and nerve sectioning, that’s definitive. If it’s a flu condition, after the obstruction improves, that situation reverses.” , he clarifies.
“What we see most nowadays are problems with Covid-19, and in most cases we manage to reverse the picture of anosmia, with specific drugs, olfactory training and nasal hygiene”, adds the specialist.
Just as recovery time is variable, the treatment of anosmia also depends on the underlying cause. The doctor explains that, in the case of Covid, there is olfactory training and the use of drugs. In the case of nasal polyps, medications and surgery are required. For colds and flu, simply improving your blockage will solve the problem.
