With researchers cited in the main world science rankings, the institution supported by Rede D’Or is also growing in the fields of teaching and innovation
Founded in 2010, in Rio de Janeiro, by a group of medical researchers, the Instituto D’Or de Pesquisa e Ensino (IDOR) has become one of the institutions that contribute most to national medical research.

The private non-profit institution, whose main sponsor is Rede D’Or – the largest private healthcare company in Latin America – has leading researchers in their areas of scientific knowledge, with collaborative projects with scientists from more than 80 countries.
“Since the beginning, we have mobilized resources and encouraged our researchers to contribute solutions to current and future challenges, to improve people’s lives,” says Fernanda Tovar-Moll, radiologist, IDOR president and co- founder of the institute together with the neurologist Jorge Moll Neto, current President of the Board of Directors.
The institute also operates in the teaching pillars, with doctoral, postgraduate and undergraduate programs at the IDOR Faculty of Medical Sciences (Rio de Janeiro) and at the Unineves Faculty (João Pessoa), in addition to the present medical residency programs in several other states.
IDOR also develops a wide range of medical education activities (congresses, symposiums, meetings and courses), which impact thousands of healthcare professionals across the country. The institute is also dedicated to the area of innovation in health, being accredited since 2022 as an Embrapii Medical Biotechnology Unit, as well as having its own innovation agency, Open D’Or, an initiative aimed at facilitating solutions in hospital and health area. .
international prestige
According to the Scival platform, IDOR is ranked fifth in the world in Human Physiology, Intensive Care Medicine publications. And this is just one of the prominent positions that the institute occupies.
As a consequence of the quality and relevance of the research carried out at IDOR, the researchers have been recognized by national and international research support institutions.
In two decades, IDOR’s excellence in research has translated into more than 1,800 articles in international scientific journals, with more than 33,000 citations (see infographic).
This is due, in large part, to Oxford/AstraZeneca’s support for vaccine research and immunizers from Clover Biopharmaceuticals and CoronaVac/Butantan during the pandemic.
Bringing together more than one hundred researchers in 12 areas and present in nine states, IDOR grows in an integrated way with the expansion of Rede D’Or, which has 72 hospitals and 56 oncology clinics in the country. “One of our goals in contributing to scientific progress is to give back to society by improving medical practices and health care,” comments Tovar-Moll.
An example of scientific progress is the work of the doctor Fernando Bozza on the increase of antimicrobial resistance, especially in intensive care units. “Rede D’Or has more than 2,500 intensive care beds. With machine learning and big data techniques, we are integrating this large volume of data, which is analyzed by artificial intelligence capable of early identification of patients with the highest risk of contracting infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria, as well as helping doctors in the best prescription of antibiotics”, he explains.
Another project that has gained prominence is research with laboratory-created brain organoids. Led by neuroscientist Stevens Rehen, it has led to publications in journals such as Science. Rehen also works on the IDOR/Rede D’Or social projects that spread science in public schools and at events.
For dr. Paulo Hoff, president of Oncologia D’Or and IDOR researcher in the area of Oncology, the studies conducted by the institute have significant benefits for the entire population. “It is very important that private institutions like Rede D’Or participate in the development of medical knowledge, helping not only their patients but society as a whole,” he says.
