The answer is Marcia Datz Abadi, Medical Director of MSD Brasil and one of the guests of Casa Clã
HPV, Human Papillomavirus, can infect the skin and mucous membranes of men and women in the oral, genital or anal region, and is a STI, i.e. a sexually transmitted infection. If left untreated, it can progress seriously, even leading to cancer. That is why the vaccine is so important and is available in the Unified Health System (SUS) for young people aged 9 to 14, being applied in two doses.

But if there is a lot of talk about the risks of HPV, there are still doubts about the virus during pregnancy and, especially, childbirth: Is it possible for an infected woman to give birth vaginally?
“YES, HPV is not a contraindication for vaginal birth“, says Marcia Datz Abadi, oncologist and medical director of MSD Brasil. “But it is always important that this is evaluated by the obstetrician-gynecologist who accompanies the pregnant woman,” she warns. The specialist participated in the talk Women’s Health: HPV awareness and vaccination as the best ways to prevent cancerlast Friday 10, at Casa Clã, together with Andréa Paiva Gadelha Guimarães, clinical oncologist at the AC Camargo hospital.

The question is important, as a cesarean section may be indicated if there are large genital warts, obstruction of the birth canal or risk of severe bleeding. As indicated in the booklet What is this HPV (2022), from the Brazilian group of gynecological cancers, another possibility is surgery to remove warts. Anyway, “the choice of mode of delivery (normal or cesarean) must be assessed by the doctor, individually”.
