Know the risks of using Ozempic without a prescription

The expert explains why the new trend of social networks can affect the health of patients

Created by the pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk, the injectable medicine “Ozempic”, which contains the active substance semaglutin, is used in the treatment of patients with not yet controlled type 2 diabetes. In combination with diet and exercise, in these cases, the drug is effective in reducing blood glucose levels and the risk of health complications.

Despite the recent association of the substance with weight loss on social networks, its intake should never be carried out without medical indication and follow-up. “Importantly, there are people who are allergic to semaglutide and other substances in Ozempic. Therefore, like all medications, caution is required before pointing or ingesting it,” cautions Dr. Thais Mussi, endocrinologist of the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism (SBEM).

Warnings with combining Ozempic with alcohol

As the drug is widely used in diabetic patientsIt is important to avoid or consume alcohol in moderation. This is because it can cause hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia in patients with diabetes. Hypoglycemia most often occurs with alcohol consumption. Even small amounts can significantly lower blood sugar, especially when taken on an empty stomach or after exercise.

Associated with Ozempic, the risk may be greater, even more so if the patient is using other medications that lower blood glucose, such as insulin. On the other hand, chronic alcohol abuse can cause glucose intolerance, weight gain, and hyperglycemia.

“And if the use of the drug is for weight loss, since alcohol is very caloric, we must avoid its excessive consumption to achieve the desired result of using the drug, which is weight loss. The moderate consumption of alcohol generally does not affect blood glucose levels in patients with controlled diabetes,” explains the endocrinologist.

Talking to a doctor about drug combinations is essential to avoid problems

Drug interference with other drugs

According to research, Ozempic does not interfere with others drugssuch as contraceptives. There are no reports of decreased contraceptive effects, but every time a woman loses weight, her fertility increases and so does her chance of becoming pregnant if she does not protect herself adequately. “Regardless, talking to your doctor about combining medications is always essential,” advises Dr. Thais Mussi.

Contraindications of medicine

Using Ozempic is not suitable for everyone. “This medicine is not really for people with diabetes type 1 and people with diabetic ketoacidosis – which is an acute complication of type 1 diabetes mellitus,” says the doctor.

Additionally, Dr. Thais Mussi draws attention to patients who have a family history of a type of cancer called medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN2). “In these cases it is very important to understand with your doctor whether you can use Ozempic,” emphasizes the specialist.

Another issue highlighted by the endocrinologist is the need to make it clear that Ozempic is not insulin. That is, this drug should never be used as a substitute for this substance in the treatment of diabetes.
