Good business leadership doesn’t depend on gender, says the psychologist

For an expert, women have developed specific skills, but it is not possible to generalize the way they lead

A good leader has special characteristics that make him or her a key person within an organization, but these characteristics are gender-independent and can be developed by anyone who wants to improve in their role.

Second Monique Stonypsychologist with more than 15 years of experience as an HR executive in multinational organizations and an advocate for the personal and professional development of women, one should not generalize when thinking about leadership, even though women may have developed some specific skills due to historical and social .

“I believe in good leaders regardless of gender. That is, I believe in people who have vision, planning, good communication, active listening power, influence, interest in the development of others, empathy, resilience, etc,” she says.

Women develop more empathy

Explain that leadership has to do with people and not with whether the leader is a woman or a man.

“Throughout my experience I have seen a number of situations happen with all genders. What happens is that, due to a historical and social background, women tend to be more predisposed to develop characteristics such as empathy, active listening, flexibility and resilience ”, she evaluates.

The specialist explains that, culturally, women end up facing situations of pressure when reconciling their personal and professional lives, and these situations end up contributing to the development of certain skills, especially if they are already mothers.

“We know that some tasks should fall to both the father and the mother, but unfortunately they fall more in the hands of women,” he analyzes.

For a woman to become a good leader, in addition to the characteristics already mentioned, Monique says you need to know how to position yourself, communicate what you want and where you want to go, work hard with feedback and be able to provide support when necessary.

“And that goes for any leadership, really,” he concludes.
