The trend of the moment makes environments more fun
After an all-minimalist era, it’s time for maximalist decor to have its moment. Colorful furniture, mirrors in different frames, and fun objects around the house are some of the features that set this aesthetic apart. However, after all, how to implement this style of decoration in your home?
“Maximalist decorating can be confused by many with tacky, but, to the right extent, with furniture and accessories that help fit into this aesthetic, it’s possible to create a funnier environment, less serious and neutral, with more life; is a trend that came after we had the boom of minimalism,” explains architect Juliana Barros.
1. Reuse items
Reusing elements in decor can be the key to this kind of trend. “We can think of different creative ways to bring lightness and fun to a place. Reusing old objects that we have at home is a great way to use creativity when decorating. An old chair or galosh can become a potted plant, for example “explains Juliana Barros.
2. Plan of the moment
In landscaping maximalism comes with the elephant ear, the plant that is depopulating on social media; his fans are spread among over 50000# of the Instagram. In the wave of large indoor plants, this species, from the araceae family, like Adam’s rib, attracts attention.
“This species needs light or partial shade baths, requiring from four to six hours of direct light a day. Be careful, because it will grow: it can even reach two meters in height, with leaves of about one meter. Do this at least once per day and [ela] it needs a very nutrient-rich soil,” explains Daiana Devitte, landscaper at Rio Plantas.
The great thing is that you can use elephant ear anywhere: living room, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom. Everything will depend on your tastes and on the place that you think is best for the plant. “An important tip for growing this plant is to carry out maintenance on elephant’s ear from time to time. If the plant is in a pot, try to change its container at least once a year”, concludes the specialist.

3. Colorful furniture
Colorful shelves, dressing tables, headboards and even wardrobes have already been a hit in recent years, and Juliana Barros also says that these are the main pieces to achieve the maximalist decoration in the environment. Bet on bright colors like yellow, blue and pink rose.
4. Psychedelic carpets
Even carpets can be used in this type of decoration. “One of the main accessories that help compose the maximalist environment is the colorful rug, with a print, with a more lively tone. It will make the room more fun, which is one of the main propositions of the maximalist aesthetic, but it also leaves the environment charming and elegant, since the carpet is not always seen in residences”, explains the architect.
5. Mix of prints
In the eyes of many, mixing prints can mean a lack of sense of style, but it’s one of the main pillars to enter the maximalist aesthetic. Juliana Barros says this can be done in several ways, with the painted wall striped next to the gingham print rug or with a zebra print rug and polka dot cushions. It is also possible to use pictures with drawings in the environment.
“The greatest care when composing with multiple prints is to pay attention to their background. The big advice here is to use backgrounds that are within the same color palette, this way the prints will talk to each other, even if they are very different Another important care concerns the choice of themes: it is important to adopt a theme [tropical, por exemplo] and follow it, no matter what press you use,” he guides.
6. Fun items
Here, using creativity is the big secret. “It has several ambient accessories that help create a more relaxed atmosphere, such as the photo with the (iconic) tongue, which is the Rolling Stones acronym for the band; [você] you can use colored vases with a wavy shape, in which to insert plants inside. The LED sign has been very successful and is a great option to add to the room. Do it with words or phrases that have meaning for you, many girls write ‘girl power’, for example”, indicates the architect.
Interior designer and decorator Georgia Guedes says: “old records, shoes and bags, pillows, books, or even souvenirs that we bring as a souvenir of a special trip can begin to compose a fun and creative environment. Here the idea is to unleash creativity”.
7. Take care of yourself
Although it is a beautiful trend, you have to be careful when to decorate. The architect claims that wrong colours, accessories placed in the wrong places, improper lighting can disturb whoever is in the space. This, in turn, can impair attention if someone wants to read, study or work in the room.
