The content of the article

There is a washing machine in almost every apartment. Before putting on outerwear, you need to select the mode for delicate fabrics. We will tell you how to wash different types of coats at home.

How to wash a coat in a washing machine

First, find out about the composition of the fabric of your coat. Only polyester is safe to machine wash. All other materials risk irreversibly losing their appearance during machine washing.

  1. Set the mode for delicate fabrics in the machine settings: temperature 40 degrees, “delicate wash” or “hand wash”, deactivate the spin cycle.
  2. It is recommended to place the coat in a special laundry bag.
  3. Load only one layer into the drum, no other items.
  4. Fasten all fasteners except buttons.
  5. Pour the fabric softener into the dedicated compartment.
  6. Turn the coat over and place it in the drum.
  7. After washing, let the coat dry on a hanger in a well-ventilated place.

But the type of fabric is not the only criterion that determines whether a coat can be machine washed. We also recommend that you check the durability of the dye. To do this, fill a basin with lukewarm water and soak a small corner of the product in it for an hour. If the material fades, the coat cannot be machine washed.

How to hand wash your coat

Wool, draped and cashmere coats can only be hand washed. In doing so, follow a few safety rules:

  • The water temperature when washing a coat should not exceed 40 degrees.
  • Wash with a liquid or powder detergent specially formulated for delicate fabrics.
  • Add detergent at the rate of one tablespoon per liter of water.
  • Soak your coat in water and detergent for just a few minutes.
  • After soaking, rinse the item thoroughly with cold water, removing any remaining suds.
  • Then hang the coat on a hanger and let it dry on its own.
  • When the fabric is only slightly damp, iron it through cheesecloth and hang it up.

How to wash a wool coat

Woolen coats can only be washed by hand. Do not try to cheat and wash the woolen product in the machine by activating the hand wash mode. He will not be able to survive such a procedure with a whole, unharmed coat. Of course, the safest option is to take the item to the dry cleaners.

Before washing a wool coat, check if stain removal alone can be enough. If there are a few dirty areas on the fabric, you can treat them with a sponge soaked in a special detergent for washing delicate fabrics.

If complex stains are found, more radical means can be used. Coffee spilled on your favorite coat? Use glycerin. Its solution must be applied to the pollution and it is enough to wait for the product to dry.

Grease stains are easily removed with a solution of vinegar and alcohol, which you need to soak in a cotton ball and walk over the contaminated areas. You can also prepare a mixture of ammonia and salt in a 1:4 ratio, apply it to the stains and rub it in, then shake off the salt with a brush. From fresh greasy stains, starch, talcum powder or flour will help, which are sprinkled with pollution, covered with a sheet of paper and the coat is left in this form overnight.

If you still want to wash the whole coat, fill the tub with water at a temperature not higher than 30 degrees, pour in the detergent for delicate fabrics and put the item in it. After 10-15 minutes, fill the tub with clean water and rinse the coat. Repeat the procedure until the soapy solution is completely washed off the fabric. Do not wring, but lay the thing on a horizontal surface on a towel. Change the substrate periodically. When the coat is almost completely dry, you can iron it at low temperature.

To keep your woolen coat in good condition for as long as possible, clean it a few times a week with a special roller with adhesive tape.

How to wash a draped coat

If you are concerned about local contamination, clean them only. Before completely laundering a draped diaper, prepare a weak solution of wool detergent and rub it into any stains or slick areas. Do not press too hard on the fabric. Then sponge it all up, rinse and hang on a hanger. If you are not satisfied with the result of such wet cleaning, try washing a draped coat in the same way as a wool coat.

You can also clean the draped product “dry”. First, read the information on the coat label to find out what type of care is allowed in your case. Hang outerwear on hangers and inspect the fabric for localized contamination. Use a sticky roller to go over the material, cleaning it of dust and coils.

Lay the item on a flat, horizontal surface and sprinkle wool detergent on the stains. Put on protective gloves and rub the product into the dirt. Leave on for an hour, then shake off the powder with a brush, moving strictly in the direction of hair growth. Remove any remaining product with a slightly damp sponge.

To freshen greasy cuffs, collars and pockets, plain breadcrumbs, a mixture of one part salt and four parts ammonia, or a special foam for cleaning carpets will help. Any chosen tool should first be tested on an inconspicuous area of the fabric.

How to wash a polyester coat

As we said, polyester is considered the least problematic upholstery material and it can be machine washed (provided product label instructions don’t prohibit it). Before washing a polyester coat at home, stock up on a special detergent gel and carefully study our machine washing instructions above.

How to wash a cashmere coat

Read the label carefully before washing your cashmere coat. If in doubt, it is best to go to a dry cleaner, because cashmere is a very delicate material. If you still decide to wash your cashmere coat yourself, use the wool coat washing instructions and remember: you can only wash cashmere as a last resort and only by hand! Before soaking anything, detach a removable collar, cuffs, metallic trim, if any. Instead of washing wool and cashmere, you can use baby shampoo. After all the necessary procedures, let the cashmere coat dry on a hanger or on a horizontal surface. Before it dries completely, iron the still damp cloth through the gauze with a hot iron.

How to wash a coat with fur elements

In this case, we look at the composition of the main material. If it is polyester, the coat can be washed in a typewriter, but for this you must first remove the fur parts. With removable design elements, everything is easy, the fur can simply be detached. But if the fur trim is sewn, it will have to be torn off. If an insulating fur lining is sewn into the coat, then it is better to say goodbye to the idea of washing a thing in a typewriter.

Fur elements can be cleaned separately with a soft bristle brush and regular hair shampoo. Lather a little shampoo, apply to the brush and go over the fur. Semolina will help to slightly refresh the fur product, which will absorb grease and dirt that have settled between the villi.

If the fur is very dirty, we wash it! Fill a basin with cold water and add a detergent for delicate materials, let the fur soak for 15 minutes, lightly rub the fur so that the foam rinses the space between the hairs well. After that, do not wring out the product, but hang it vertically above the tub so that the water flows freely. While the fur is still damp, it can be combed gently with a sparse-toothed comb.

It is more reasonable to give a valuable and expensive natural fur coat for professional cleaning, at home there is a high risk of spoiling the product.
