Many parents have a habit of overriding their will in raising their children. This also in the basic details such as the choice of clothes and the definition of one’s way of dressing. “I always let him [Yasmin] dressing according to what he thought was interesting to her and this gave her a lot of independence and confidence at the time. I think that was the crux of it all. Let the teenager dress how she wants and understand what her tastes are about her. She ends up bringing it into other areas of her life,” she points out.

For the influencer, fashion is a variety of expression, a communication of the transparency of who we are. Therefore, parents should not prevent the child from choosing her clothes. “You convey an image through fashion. I’ve allowed myself to change my style many times in my life, following who I was in each of those moments,” explains the fashion researcher.

understand your child

From some content on her profile, it is clear that Talitah and Yasmin have opposite personalities in some ways. While her mother uses bright colors in her wardrobe, her daughter has a black item for every day. Talitah reveals that these differences between the two don’t just apply to their choice of clothing.

“We’ve even painted our house after their personalities, and it’s important that she has the empathy to recognize that we’re really different, and have opposing viewpoints on some things—and we’re, both, amazing,” she says.

Although it is very common to force children and adolescents to grow up as they want, for her the importance lies in the freedom of individual choice. “They do this thinking they’re helping, but end up projecting their ambitions onto their children. It’s important for parents to understand that our children are not an extension of us.“, he says. “Choosing what they do based on our judgment will only push them away from us.”

“When we give them this freedom to figure out what they like and what they are, we teach them to have autonomy and to feel at ease,” she explains. “Otherwise, the child may end up growing up not understanding what is, and that generates a lot of insecurity and it can cause her to grow up with no personality and end up imitating other people’s behavior, for example. It is very important that he has autonomy to discern what is right or wrong”

respect is important

Ultimately, Talitah says that while she gives her daughter style advice, she already understands what the girl likes, and as a mother, your role is to reinforce her choices and make sure she’s always confident and happy. “There is no price to pay to see a child or adolescent grow up with the independence of understanding what they like, what they want and, above all, have the confidence that they are what they want.”
