The inflammation in the appendix that affected Carol Dias is treated only with surgery
Common, inflammation of the appendix or appendicitis is a leading cause of abdominal surgery in Brazil. The problem, which affects people of all ages, has affected former panicat and now financial influencer Carol Dias, 34. She had to be rushed to have her organ removed on Tuesday (28).
Reporting the case on social media, Carol said she began experiencing severe pain in the region over the weekend.
“I kept getting symptoms like headache, stomach ache, very tired, sleepy and very nauseous. Then I decided to go to the doctor with my sister and I swore it would be nothing. I thought it was a virus. tests and I discovered that it was appendicitis. So, on Sunday, I was hospitalized and operated on yesterday,” he described, as published by “Caras”.

This abdominal discomfort that Carol has described usually begins as an “ill-defined” pain with no localization signs. “Only with the evolution of the clinical picture does the pain tend to be located in the lower right quadrant of the abdomen and it is then that appendicitis really begins to be suspected”, explains the digestive system surgeon Octacílio Felício Jr. Earth.
However, this is not the only symptom. Know the stages of appendicitis:
- nausea and vomiting, resulting in loss of appetite
- fever
- bowel irregularity with diarrhoea, indigestion or constipation
What Causes Appendicitis?
According to the Ministry of Health, the inflammation is usually caused by an obstruction of the appendix with the remains of feces. The Brazilian College of Digestive Surgery also considers the relationship with gastrointestinal infections.
How to treat appendicitis?
The only way to treat appendicitis is through surgery, in many cases as an emergency. The operation aims to remove the inflamed appendix to prevent the condition from worsening, putting the patient’s life at risk.
According to the surgeon, in cases that have not yet been confirmed, the ideal is not to prescribe painkillers. This is because medications can mask symptoms and harm the diagnosis.
From the onset of symptoms, how long does it take for the appendix to burst?
According to Felício Jr., the perforation of the appendix usually occurs after hours of evolution when the diagnosis is not made in advance. These are cases where the person has inflammation, but has not sought medical help.
“Normally, in 48h to 72h, from the onset of symptoms, the appendix already acquires a degree of inflammation, and already has a certain degree of infection associated with it, which can lead to perforation,” clarifies the doctor.
Can older people get appendicitis?
“Appendicitis has a higher prevalence in adults and young people,” replies the surgeon. But this does not exclude the occurrence of inflammation in children and the elderly. On the contrary, in the evaluation of the doctor, it is necessary to be even more attentive to the symptoms in these patients because it is common to exclude the possibility and delay the diagnosis.
