Experts point to the right amount of daily brushing to ward off oral disease, as well as other dental care
How many times a day do you brush your teeth? The national health survey, conducted by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), from 2013 to 2019, showed that 9 out of 10 Brazilians brush less than necessary.

According to the survey, about 90% of the Brazilian population cleans their mouth up to twice a day and 63% floss, brush and toothpaste. The survey also shows that 25% of people aged 45-59, and 28% aged 60-74, have lost 13 or more teeth.
These numbers may not be that up-to-date – it’s worth noting that a new survey by the Ministry of Health is underway (effective 2021-2022). Even so, they show that the oral health conditions of Brazilians are less than ideal. In fact, they are a reflection of social inequality.
Important tips for taking care of your teeth
According to the dentistry professor at the Estácio, Carolina Freitas Lage, caries, gingivitis, periodontitis, are the conditions that most affect children and adults. The dentist reiterates the need for good oral hygiene habits. “Tooth brushing should be at least three times a day and always after meals. Equally necessary is a regular visit to the dentist,” he recommends.
Professor Carla Kruger, also from Estácio, warns that it is important to always be aware of any changes in the color of the oral tissues, bleeding, lumps or pain in the oral cavity. “If you see a change that persists for more than 15 days, you should see a dental professional for an evaluation,” she guides.
Brushing and flossing
Although it is something recurring, brushing your teeth is not that simple. Also, it is something that is on top of mistakes when it comes to oral health. Carla explains that all sides of the teeth need to be brushed on all teeth.
“The ideal is to use a small toothbrush with soft bristles. Another mistake is not flossing all teeth or using it incorrectly. Floss is a complement to the brush. It will clean between the teeth, where the brush will not comes,” he clarifies.
Can I use mouthwash?
Daily care also consists in the choice and use of products, as Dr. Carolina explains. “Using mouthwash without the advice of the dentist and indiscriminately can be harmful, cause dryness of the mucous membranes and, consequently, periodontal disease, and substances that promote stains on the teeth due to prolonged use”, warns the specialist.
Furthermore, he points out that the product is not recommended for children under six years of age and, even for adults, should only be used on the advice of a dentist.
Prevention from childhood
Anyone who believes that oral health care should only begin after the birth of the first teeth is wrong. Pediatrician and IDOMED lecturer Dr. Alexander Engelberg explains that this is not the case.
According to data from the Ministry of Health, more than half of five-year-olds suffer from tooth decay. “The mouth is the gateway to the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems, the main entry route for infections. Brushing your teeth is a part of body hygiene, just like taking a shower,” she explains.
Alexander Engelberg also points out that there is a toothpaste suitable for infants, since there is a risk that the child will swallow some of the product, only needing to use an amount similar to a grain of rice. When the child learns to spit, the amount of cream to put on the toothbrush should be the size of a grain of a pea, indicates the professional.
