Tracey’s request for bariatric surgery was rejected by the UK healthcare system, so she resorted to having the procedure done in Turkey where the surgery is cheaper.

What explains this excessive weight loss?

According to bariatric surgeon Dr. Fabio Rodrigues, several factors may have influenced the procedure’s exaggerated results.

“The first point that could have generated this problem is the technique used. Not knowing exactly what kind of surgery was performed in Turkey, a technique with metabolic approaches could have been used which, while being quite safe, can in some cases cause cases of malnutrition in the patient,” he explains.

The doctor emphasizes that performing the procedure requires a multidisciplinary team to analyze the patient’s case as a whole, including the psychological factor which seems to be very present in the case. “Why was the first surgery denied? What criteria did the patient not meet for this? Both of these issues and the emotional upheaval of the change of surgery site may have affected her,” she points out.

Also, the specialist says that it is not possible to determine in advance what weight the patient will have after the procedure. “This is defined by the muscle structure of the patient, as well as problems inherent in each one’s body. Each case is different. Some people need to have the surgery done again, while others have better results than expected. It is necessary to analyze the cases individually”, concludes the doctor.
