The similarities are many, but each is awkward in its own way. Find out the difference between ringworm and chilblains
For those who play sports or dance, they are relatively common. But it doesn’t make them any less uncomfortable about it. Mycosis and chilblains are problems that can affect anyone, at any time of the year. The result is terrible damage to the health of the feet and nails. After all, is there any difference between them?

The Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD) defines mycoses as “infections caused by fungi affecting the skin, nails and hair. They are particularly frequent in the tropics, where there are ideal conditions of heat and humidity, necessary for the development of fungi1” . Similarly, chilblains also arise through ringworm. By the way, both infections occur due to fungi, mainly due to heat and humidity in the foot area.
Ringworm or Chilblain: What’s the Difference?
Dermatologist dr. Bruno Vargas explains that mycosis is a silent disease that can make diagnosis difficult. Again similar, the chilblain also appears subtly. “There is no specific profile of the population that can develop the disease, both a young and an elderly patient can contract mycosis or chilblains. That’s why it’s important to know more about both,” he comments.
He adds that the most affected regions generally contribute to exacerbate the problem. “Today, it is rare for patients to pay attention to these regions which are more hidden. It is only when the fungal infection is already present, interfering with the color or thickness of the nail, or when the itchy feet have reached a critical level, that the patient becomes aware of having a problem to solve”, underlines the doctor.
Therefore, some signs must be constantly observed. “In the case of mycosis, for example, detachment of the nail, spots and streaks on the ends and an increasingly thicker appearance are common. Chilblain is well known for itching in the affected region. The famous ‘athlete’s foot’ is very uncomfortable and can cause cracking, swelling, local burning and bad smell. This is why it is essential to take good care of your feet and nails”, warns the specialist.
Treatment
Chilblains may or may not pass quickly. That is, they can be acute or chronic, respectively. Although common, chilblains should be taken seriously, as the intense itching can lead to cracking and the ingress of bacteria, aggravating the patient’s health.
The duration of treatment, in cases of mycosis, mainly depends on the severity. “On average we consider 6 months to 1 year of treatment or more. The good news is that today antifungals are available in different formats to optimize treatment response times”, points out the expert. In any case, it is essential to consult a dermatologist to evaluate the case and indicate the best solution.
