According to the institution, the ban is due to the lack of scientific evidence about its benefit and safety for human health; decision was a request sought by several medical societies
OR Federal Council of Medicine (FCM) has decided to ban the use and prescription by doctors of androgenic and anabolic steroids for aesthetic purposes, mass gain or to improve sports performance. The decision was published in Official Journal of the Union this Tuesday 11 and establishes that hormonal therapies can only be indicated in the event of specific and scientifically proven deficiencies.
In addition to the recommendation, courses, events and advertising that stimulate or associate possible benefits of androgen therapies to these purposes.
The resolution is a response to a request by six Brazilian medical societies who jointly signed an open letter in March this year warning of the increase in the number of cases of complications due to the misuse of hormones and also focused publicity on the topic .
“This action is necessary, as it concerns not only the medical profession, but also because it has a pedagogical and attentive character to the lay public, which is also widely affected by distorted and meaningless information on this subject, but which is commonly well- prepared and attractive,” they state in the letter. .
The document was signed jointly by the presidents of the Brazilian Society of Cardiology (SBC)THE Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabology (SBEM)THE Brazilian Federation of Gastroenterology (FBG)THE Brazilian Society of Exercise and Sports Medicine (SBMEE)THE Brazilian Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics Associations (FEBRASGO) and the Brazilian Society of Urology (SBU).
The organizations say there is a lack of scientific evidence on the safety of use for human health and its benefits. They also reiterate that some professionals operate with a lack of medical ethics and dot other fields “with designations that have a lot of marketing, instead of science, as well as not being recognized by any medical entity.”
Among the practices criticized by the group are those of anti-aging, integrative medicine, performance and hormonal modulation
Other elaborations of the decree provide for the prescription of hormones disclosed as “bioidentical”, in “nano” formulation or commercial nomenclature and without the necessary scientific evidence. Even the prescription of Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators (SARMS)for any indication, since the marketing, manufacturing, distribution, import, handling and dissemination of products in Brazil are suspended as of 2021.
