Learn why teens’ pursuit of plastic surgery calls for caution

The influence of social media has increased the demand for this type of procedure in Brazil

Generally, teenagers are influenced by celebrities, friends or social media that promote physical appearance as one of the main qualities of a person. For this reason, they tend to believe that plastic surgery is the solution to their insecurities and self-esteem issues.

“Adolescence is a stage where self-esteem still depends a lot on looking good. In addition to bullying, which is a reason for seeking aesthetic procedures, digital media itself can lead to this discomfort with one’s image,” he says plastic surgeon Dr. Daniel Lobo Botelho, president of BAPS (Brazilian Association of Plastic Surgeons).

Always according to the doctor, before performing this type of operation, it is important that the patient is psychologically prepared to face the change in his image after the operation. “In this sense and taking into account some peculiarities, adolescents, when they are physically and mentally healthy, can undergo procedures, provided they are accompanied by their guardians to the consultation”, explains the plastic surgeon.

psychological health

The association maintains that the indication for surgery is more linked to the problem than to the age of the patient, but it is necessary to evaluate the level of growth, physical evolution and maturation of the adolescent. In general, reconstructive surgery has no age limit; Cosmetic surgery, on the other hand, can be performed from the age of 16, subject to parental authorization.

BAPS cautions that clinicians should be aware of issues such as changes in perception of body image, which becomes a pathology when it begins to affect the adolescent’s social life and health, demonstrating that the mental scheme of the young person is not in line with reality. In these cases, the distortion of their body image becomes a real experience for them.

The procedure requires maturity

BAPS argues that adolescents should ideally talk to their parents and, after obtaining permission, have a frank discussion with their doctor about the expectations and results of the surgery, as well as pre- and post-operative care.

“Before carrying out treatments in adolescents, the surgeon must talk a lot with this audience to verify that the patient is a good candidate for surgery, making sure that he is seeking the procedure for the right reasons and that he is emotionally mature to deal with the stress of the whole process, from anesthesia and recovery to possible complications,” stresses the president of the association.

Interventions that can be performed on young people

Some procedures are simple, although not without complications, and can be a good way to restore self-esteem for young people. For example, there is otoplasty (ear surgery), which can be performed from the age of six, when the ear reaches 80-90% of adult size, but at the age before school life, avoiding bullying.

“In some cases, the operation also brings functional benefits, which help the patient to carry out daily activities better. An example is reduction mammoplasty or mastopexy, which eliminate the discomfort of very large breasts, pains in the back and shoulders, dermatological irritation in the region, among other factors,” emphasizes the BAPS president. A multidisciplinary evaluation is required to characterize a repair procedure.

Rhinoplasty can also be performed, but usually after the age of 16, when the nose is fully developed. In the case of liposuction, the best thing to do is wait until you come of age. “If one really decides to opt for plastic surgery, it is essential that the patient or those responsible for research, before choosing a specialist, make sure of the doctor’s competence, establishing a relationship of trust with him”, concludes dr. Daniel Lobo Botelho.
